South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said Friday that she has reversed her initial plan to call a special legislative session this year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
When the Supreme Court’s decision first leaked in May, Noem tweeted that she would “immediately call for a special session to save lives” if Roe was overturned. South Dakota already had a trigger law that immediately banned abortions after the ruling came out in June.
Noem, who has since shown caution in the evolving landscape of abortion politics, is among prominent Republican governors across the country who are navigating an issue that threatens to divide the party while giving Democrats a potential election-year boost.
“In the last few weeks, it has become clear that South Dakota is the most pro-life state in the nation,” Noem said in a statement, pointing to a ban that allows a woman to have an abortion only if it will save her life, as well as a website she launched that directs pregnant women to state resources.
Noem said she has the support of top lawmakers, as well as influential anti-abortion groups, in holding off legislative action until next year.
For abortion rights advocates, the governor’s announcement provided little comfort as they strategized how to restore access to the procedure in South Dakota.
The American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota said it would turn its attention to the November election and would closely follow the 2023 legislative session.
“Politicians who do not believe in protecting the civil rights and liberties of their constituents have no business in governors’ mansions, in state attorneys general’s offices or in state legislatures,” Libby Skarin, the ACLU’s campaign director, said in a statement.

Similar to Obamacare. It was SO easy for members of congress to vote to repeal dozens of times when there was an Obama veto. But with full control of the government they dithered and delayed and prevented actual repeal.
Nikki McRomBush is a finger-in-the-wind phony.
Should be Kristi McRomBush. I got confused with Nikki Haley, who is exactly the same as Noem.
If the state already has a trigger law then what was the point for Noem calling for a special session then?
“South Dakota already had a trigger law that immediately banned abortions after the ruling came out in June.”
Enforcing the existing law would be a good idea. Of course with a second law, abortions would be double-banned which might be twice as effective.
“If the state already has a trigger law then what was the point for Noem calling for a special session then?”
Exactly. She wanted to talk tough. Look at me. If there wasn’t any need to adjust the laws, then she should not have said she would call a special session.
Sounds like, she wants to make exceptions to the ruling.
This woman has great ambition; that is obvious.
She doesn’t seem to have many principles outside of self-promotion.
Stupid to tweet about a special session if you already have a trigger law. Even if her heart is in the right place, she just doesn't seem that bright. Seems like she blurts things out and then advisers have a talk with her and she changes her mind.
This woman will cave at the first opportunity. She's another Nikki Haley.
Yeah?
So how come Dementia Joe has hit record low approval ratings and Republicans won that congressional seat in an 84% Latino district in Texas for the first time in over a 100 years AFTER the Roe decision went agianst the Dems?
Nimrata Randhawa(Nikki Haley) is a fraud.
Noem is not far behind.
“She doesn’t seem to have many principles outside of self-promotion.”
In my opinion this lady is cute and ambitious and a great governor. But I do not think she has the inner core to go head to head with the likes of a Hitlery or Pelosi.
I know for fact she has presidential ambitions - thus the self promotion, as a relative of mine is working on her campaign.
As far as being President is concerned, I think she’s less qualified than was Sarah Palin.
Just as it was easy to pass abortion “trigger laws” secure in the belief that a) Roe would never be overturned; and b) That you could use the USSC as a campaign punching bag for as long as you wanted to be in office.
South Dakota ALREADY had a trigger law. Abortion is now BANNED in SD.
There is no need to call a special session to fix what isn’t broken.
You are Reeeeeeeing because of your blind hatred for anyone who isn’t of the trailer park Republican class.
The Texas special election was held on June 14th.
Why do you insinuate Palin wasn’t really qualified?
Well, the Roe decision was leaked long before that, and the fake news media went to war against Republicans on abortion straight way. And it still didn’t help the Dems any.
You are right. South Dakota Tourism bought an awfully lot of advertising in our market during the last election cycle. It would be nice if she had the backbone to go along with the ambitions.
Showing backbone in a state where liberals are confined to a handful of enclaves is one thing. Showing it at a national level where liberals control damn near every major city and federal bureaucracy is quite another.
On one hand, I think she might turn out OK if she served four years as VP under President Trump. OTOH, she might turn out to be just another Mike Pence.
