Draghi dangles resignation, just when Europe needs him
Politico EU ^ | 7/14/22

With Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s premiership on the brink of collapse, the European Union may be about to lose one of the last grown-ups in the room.

Draghi, 74, is credited with saving the euro during the financial crisis and has played a crucial role in stabilizing the EU’s third-biggest economy as the bloc faces an energy crunch and war on its doorstep.

But a domestic political feud within his coalition government proved too much for the Italian leader to tolerate and he announced on Thursday that he was offering to resign. His resignation was instantly rejected by Italian President Sergio Mattarella, but the drama is not over.

A confidence vote will now be held next Wednesday to test whether the government can continue. It’s far from clear that Draghi’s alliance will survive.

Italy’s political turmoil will be felt throughout Europe at a critical time, as EU leaders grapple with how to respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, rampant inflation and a coronavirus resurgence.

The collapse of Draghi’s government would risk triggering “the destabilization of Europe,” declared Antonio Saccone, a senator in the Forza Italia party in the Senate, as the political drama played out in Rome on Thursday. “You’d be doing a favor to Putin,” he told Draghi’s critics before a key vote in parliament.

The crisis blew up after long-running tensions between Draghi and his coalition partners in the populist 5Star Movement boiled over. After weeks of increasingly bad-tempered talks, the 5Stars walked out and refused to back one of Draghi’s signature economic plans in what the prime minister said amounted to a vote of no confidence in the coalition.

Good riddance to another tyrant that did much to cause the destruction of his country. Too bad he’s not leaving with tar and feathers.

There are a number of things left out of this topic.

First, he resigns over the failure to pass the recession package to bring stimulus to the general public. The 5-Star-Movement are the ones in the coalition who halted the stimulus.

Second, what the 5-Star-Movement was totally against....a trash-burn facility to be built in Rome. Too costly, and this was some party moment of unity to halt the stimulus because of this.

Third, the reason for the trash-burn facility? Well...trash in Rome has been piling up for months, and this has attracted wild boar into the city limits...creating a public nuisance. The burn facility was supposed to speed up trash removal and end the wild boar problem.

Lets just admit it....politics is fairly screwed up in Italy, and some Italians think it’s time to break the country up because of the bitter political bickering going on.

Maybe Italians should try federalism instead of breaking up.

A trash burn facility in Rome should not be the concern of a national government.

This Italian stimulus package hasn’t gotten much attention outside of Italy. I’d be curious what all got shoved into it. But you don’t see many Italian journalists digging into this. This garbage burn facility only got into public perception because of the 5-Star-Movement going negative about it.

Personally, if you have a wild boar problem....you need to bounty-up and give hunters an incentive to hunt on a massive scale.

The fact that everything is FREE, FREE, FREE in Italy might have something to do with its collapse. That and all of the migrants pouring in.

(Wake up, America)

Other than the wild boars, maybe they got something there.

I’m somewhat awake. Regardless a half century politician pervert clown became President?
While the President that he replaced had the economy humming...had China in check.
He had our southern border in check.
He would’ve botched Afghanistan like the bird brain Brandon did.
He wouldn’t have mandated the jab..or jabbed kids.
He wasn’t perfect..no man is.. but who has even came close..and that was only his first term.
He was denied his second term by a criminal outfit..dim/RINOs.
Uh

Matteo Salvini is still around. He’d be happy to take the reins and Make Italy Great Again! He was doing well until the coup d’etat that kicked him out of the prime minister’s office.
