I will never get over the fact that our society seems to produce a steady stream of young men who think it is heroic to murder innocent people. I read their histories. I look at the social science research. I’ve tried to understand the typical pathway they take to get to their evil behavior.
The common thing to say about mass shooters is that they have mental health issues, but that’s often misleading. This has been studied in a variety of ways. A majority of mass shooters do not have diagnosed mental illness. It’s mostly the circumstances that drive them to do what they do, not an underlying disease.
The more accurate place to start is with something George Bernard Shaw wrote many years ago: “The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: That’s the essence of inhumanity.”
These young men are frequently ghosts. They often experience early childhood trauma, like abuse or extreme bullying. In school no one knows them. Boys and girls turn their backs on them. Later, when journalists interview their teachers or neighbors, they are remembered as withdrawn and remote. These young men often have no social skills. Why doesn’t anybody like me? As one researcher put it, they are not necessarily loners; they are failed joiners.

It is the price of a Godless society. From that void all the other ills rush in.
Mass murder is a time for political posturing by politicians. Liberals tend to focus on the tool used to commit the crime. Conservatives are willing to look at factors which contribute to the mass murder mindset but, usually, only to propose ways to identify the killer before he or she acts.
Both of those approaches, while politically convenient, are johnnie-come-lately methods which ignore factors which built for years, even generations. They are unwilling to look at those factors for fear of offending voters like divorced parents, single parents, moviemakers, poverty pimps, atheists, educators, sex libertarians, drug legalization advocates, video game makers, rappers, social media mavens, progressive prosecutors and judges and many more.
So social pathologies grow like mushrooms in dark corners, invisible until they erupt in violence from vandalism to mass murder. The problem is, ignoring the precedents to violence is like putting it in a pressure cooker with law enforcement the steam release valve. It works to some extent so long as the valve is operating properly but bad things happen when the valve is jammed or tampered with. Rather than facing up to our societal failings which create the pressure in the first place, we are counting on containing the pressure but that means society is just one natural or man-made disaster from exploding in our faces.

Society is manufacturing really screwed up people. It will be much worse when we start having five year old children questioning their sexuality.
Ummm no. Weed isn’t making mass shooters.
There’s a lot of weed in mass murderers they use marijuana we should be more hesitant to legalize the stuff.
Folks like Lt. Governor John Fetterman here in PA the Democrat facing Oz in the Senate race has pushed pot.
We only have ‘medicinal marijuana’ in this state right now.
I mentioned marijuana but you mention the psych meds they are being widely used and people seem more angry because of that IMHO.
He may have had schizophrenia, the again his family treated him poorly and he was odd looking and was not accepted at school. He had to have been on psych drugs after the knife incident. Really crappy parents and everybody at school new he was off. Per usual with these murderers.
Medical was the camel’s nose. They’ve said this since NORML in the 70s, anything to get it legalized a bit, then fully.
Needs to be Singapore laws. Selling, dead in a week. Using, a month.

Sounds like many of us to a “T”. Trauma, being bullied. Yet I never thought of going in and wiping out a school.
What we as kids learned to do was .....”Learn to Love the Loneliness.”
That was at an Ozark School where all the kids were kin to all the other kids by blood or marriage, except us. WE were the outsiders.
All the Rocky Mountain-High Plains schools we went to were accepted, and we had friends. None in the Ozarks.
But then, the Ozark hillbillies were that way toward all outsiders.

SSRI drugs, Gapetin, and Prozac. all have Suicide and Homicide warnings.

Casting them out was a large percentage of Jesus’s healings.
