Nebraska GOP Chairman Dan Welch opened the state's GOP convention Saturday by saying he hoped the event would "clear the air" in what he admitted was a divided Republican Party.
He ended the day fired.
Nebraska GOP delegates voted to oust Welch after eight years as the party chairman during a tumultuous convention that also saw one party activist be arrested outside the venue, win reinstatement as a delegate while he was still in jail, then return to the meeting.
Welch later was replaced by Lancaster County GOP Chairman Eric Underwood through a majority vote of delegates. Underwood had introduced the motions that led to Welch's firing.
“I’m not asking you to trust me tonight … but I’m asking you for the opportunity to earn your trust,” Underwood said after being chosen to finish Welch's term. The state party will elect a chairman for a full term at the end of the year.
A wave of resignations followed Welch's termination, including the party's executive director, Taylor Gage, who previously served as spokesman to Gov. Pete Ricketts. Other resignations included national committeewoman Lydia Brasch, the first and second district chair, the party treasurer and secretary, and the assistant chairman and assistant state party chair.

Now they're out in the street!
Sounds like a bunch of RINOs got purged.
The good guys are on top?
Wow! Among Trump’s many accomplishments, he has touched off a revitalization of the GOP activist base. And it never ceases to amaze me how clueless and arrogant GOP establishment types can be toward the base of their own party.
This seems like a move in the right direction. I hope it pays off and that we see more of this.
Plate tectonics fault line made a shift.
Did little Ben Sasse have a reaction?
Sorry, but that is simply not true.
The GOP conservative base carried Reagan
They got behind Gingrich and the Contract With America.
It is the same group that became the Tea Party before Obama started his first term.
Yes, they coalesced around Trump who helped energize them again.
But to say this is a Trump accomplishment diminishes the hard work being done at the grassroots by patriotic constitutionalists.
Kick out ALL the RINOs!
I’m so glad the Democrat media and Rinos continue underestimating the Trump phenomenon. The enemy’s arrogance and ignorance works to patriots’ advantage. The establishment could have sunk Trump’s candidacy before the 2016 primaries even began if they had released the “pussy tape,” which they had been sitting on since 2005, a year before they actually did. But no, the talking heads considered Trump a “clown” with no chance of beating Yeb and capturing the GOP nomination until it was too late for them to stop him from winning the general election!
Donald Trump is just a manifestation of of a wider and earlier movement. A movement that will continue long after Trump has gone.

Many of the Reagan base voted for Trump, but I think Trump pulled off a realignment of the political parties that Reagan did not. I know people who hated Reagan that voted for Trump. The appeal of Trump’s policies is bigger and broader than Reagan’s. All you need to do is look around at a Trump rally and you visually see the difference between the old Republican Party and the new one. More minorities, more union folks, more young people—all walks of life.
I initially thought Trump’s surge in popularity might fade without him getting the nomination. But I attended a rally in Springfield, Illinois in October 2015, and the make-up and enthusiasm of the crowd convinced me he would be unstoppable. Totally different than any Republican gathering I had ever attended in the previous 40 years.
You got that right! The times are a-changin’ and the leaders in DC just can’t accept that and are fighting tooth and nail against it, even going as far as supporting Democrats in some races. Sickening.
You can say that again!
