Our '67-year old general Pavel' turns out to be the 58-year old Ivan Ivanovich Turchin, veteran of both the Russian military and the Border Guard.
He retired in 2011, after 20 years of service at the border in Uzbekistan.
So this 'exclusive' story - first published by the Daily Star, and picked up by The Sun, The Daily Mail, the New York Post etc. - turns out to be entirely fictional.
We have reached out to the Daily Star for comment but have not received a reply, as of today

Frankly I don’t mind the comparison to Larry Fine. Larry Fine was a hard working man whose patriotism and love of country was evident during both World Wars.
Unliike yourself, Herr Quisling, who takes up the cause of Russia over the United States. You side with a murderous thief who makes endless threats of nuclear war and you cheer him on.
Were Larry fine alive today he would make fun of Mr. Putin and he would mock people like yourself as the tools and fools that you are.

I decided to take a look at what appears to be the fake story about a fat “General Pavel” being sent by Putin to the front. When I first clicked to the site, all I saw was a big heading and half a dozen bullet points about this “General”. Then I was distracted for about 10 minutes, and when I looked at the site again, there was a long article below about around a dozen Russian Generals who had been killed in combat or fired by Putin. I had heard about a number of these men and seen NO articles about most of them not being real stories. Therefore, I would like to know if any other FReepers here are aware of some or all of these other Generals’ fates being faked also???
I next looked at this New York Post story. It appeared to only include the information from the original “Star” article which I have not seen myself. At the end of the Post link the next item was about Kraft mac and cheese, so there was not anything waiting to print itself.

I agree that if the Mail, Star, Post, etc. posted a fake story they should retract or verify the mistake.

What stops a retired border guard from getting a new uniform after retirement? It sells freely in surplus shop or can be tailored to size.
Sure some are fakes, but Russians have confirmed some of them dead also.
The most famous fake is major general gerasimov, who was variously reported fired, killed, wounded, many many times.
He’s still alive and they only figured out half these stories were fake when putin personally gave him an award...

Krosan, I proved that one of the generals claimed killed in this Daily Mail article was still alive.
He has been falsely reported killed, wounded, and fired in multiple news articles over the months.
If you look at the revision history of your wikipedia article, you will find that this same general was falsely claimed killed for several months on wikipedia.
It’s fixed in the current revision, though.

He was retired, not the uniform. Plus he never wore that uniform while working as it was designated for certain purposes he wasn’t involved in. And in that new uniform he may have purchased, but I doubt it, he was introduced as an reactivated general in the Russian army. The one he could purchase would not fit their standards. They, most likely, built one for him to keep from being even more embarrassed. And I would consider displaying him somewhat of an embarrassment.

Why don’t you try coming up with some better insults.
I think we a talking about some festival or commemorative event, where the veterans are invited. The guy obviously wasn’t that big during service, hence wearing a few uniform.
