Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died after being shot on Friday, the hospital treating him has confirmed.
Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader, was 67. Doctors said he died at 5:03 p.m. Japan time.
Abe was shot at about 11:30 a.m. while delivering a street speech in the western city of Nara ahead of Sunday's upper house election.
He was rushed to Nara Medical University Hospital by helicopter, arriving at 12:20 p.m. in a state of cardiac arrest. A doctor at the hospital told reporters that Abe had two gunshot wounds to the neck, with one "reaching to the heart." No bullets were found in his body, the doctor said. The hospital tried to stop the bleeding and administered blood transfusions, but the doctor said Abe "died of blood loss."
After Abe's death was confirmed, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters that he was "truly sorry" and had "no words."
"Prime Minister Abe held the heavy responsibility of prime minister of Japan, guiding the country in a difficult domestic and international situation with his outstanding leadership and ability to execute," Kishida said.
The Nara Prefectural Police arrested a 41-year-old man, identified as local resident Tetsuya Yamagami, at the scene. Video footage showed officers tackling the man, and what appeared to be a weapon on the pavement. Japanese news agency Kyodo was reporting that the suspected gunman is a former member of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force.
Officials from Abe's Liberal Democratic Party said the former prime minister was attacked from behind, and initially that the weapon seemed to be a shotgun. Police later told public broadcaster NHK that it was a handmade gun.

I was not a big fan of Abe , but felt genuinely sorry to learn of the shooting and subsequent death . Oh - I live in Japan .
A certain former President may want to UP his security.
Just sayin'.
Could you explain why he was hated enough for someone to go to great lengths to assassinate him?

Why do you say that? He was a good man. Supported Trump, and in fact they were good friends.
Do we know why he was shot?
Why would anybody want to assassinate a FORMER Prime Minister?.....................
No , I can’t , and neither can my Japanese wife . I could speculate - but won’t at this time .
Why?
Japan has its share of radicals on the right and the left.
I would bet this is a simple case of a long gunman with a personal political grudge, as opposed to some dark conspiracy.
Regardless, he will swing for his crime.
That was a LOT of smoke, I wonder if whatever weapon this was home made.. I can’ think of any modern gun that’s going to put off that much smoke from a shot... old muzzle loaders maybe...
Anyone have any more details on this?
Everything else has been tried & failed, most recently J6 - not much left on the table & they’re desperate - just sayin’.
Homemade black powder shotgun, from what I have seen in reports.
it was a home made gun
Abe “died of blood loss.”
Exsanguination
(not blood thirsty, I just like the sound of that word)
アーカンサイド?
It has been reported that it wasn’t until late in the night before that it was confirmed that he would be in Nara to speak . How did the shooter know and be prepared ?
This sucks but it does bring up an important point. Gun control does not stop crime using guns. If I’m not mistaken; Japan has some of the strictest gun control.
” it was a handmade gun.”
A GHOST gun!
Japan “a country that has some of the world’s strictest laws on gun ownership”
The killer would just have used throwing stars.
Killers gonna KILL!
