Dad should go to prison.
Police came to his house over a suicide attempt by his son.
Police came to his house after his son threatened to kill them all.
Then he signed the papers to allow his son to buy the firearms he used in the parade massacre.
Inexcusable.
Father and son, Two losers. You can throw in the wacko mother with her anger management issues
If you have a kid with psychiatric issues you never sign for or give him a gun.
Most of the time they will use the gun on themselves.
Sometimes they will use them on other people.

I agree, there is too much going on with the son for his father not to know what made the monster tick.
It was enough for me when it was reported that the father signed for his underage 21 son to apply for and obtain an Illinois FOID, which enabled the son to purchase at least three firearms. All with knowing about the crazy ideas and past behavior of his son the monster.
What papers did he have to sign to be a sponsor?
I can only add that at least in Florida, it comes down to having been involuntarily committed for psych reasons.
In FL it’s called “The Baker Act” as in “He was Baker Acted.”
This freak never spent a night on a locked ward as far as I can tell.

I had a neighbor who’s son, Johnny, even at the age of 7 or so, was stealing, used to take neighbors lawn mowers, steal the kids bikes and making those bikes go fast because he somehow put motors on the bikes, stole all sorts of things, vandalized properties used to beat up other kids in the neighborhood, did this like every day, including my brother, for no reason other than he was a mean nasty bully.
I heard his mother say, often, ‘my Johnny would never do that’.
btw, I still know his sister. Little Johnny, now grown, has been taking meth for years is homeless and a schizophrenic.
