(CNN)Rep. Liz Cheney has become an unexpected hero for Democrats. She was one of the few Republicans to vote to impeach President Donald Trump last year, has served as one of his most vocal critics in the GOP and is the vice chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol.
But we shouldn't mistake adoring press coverage and bipartisan bona fides for popularity in the place where popularity matters most for Cheney: Wyoming. A look at the data reveals that Cheney should be regarded as the clear underdog in her efforts to retain her seat.
Polling from Wyoming is limited, but what does exist paints an ominous picture. The Cooperative Election Study (CES), a large academic survey, asks Americans whether they approve or disapprove of their member of Congress.
The sample sizes in each district are usually in the lower 100s or fewer, though the trend is illuminative. Cheney sported a 72% disapproval rating in the late 2021 edition of the survey, which was fielded about 10 months after she voted to impeach Trump. That was up nearly 40 points from her 26% disapproval rating in the late 2020 version, which was fielded before Cheney's vote. All told, Cheney was the least popular member of Congress in the 2021 survey.

I didn’t see the word -—hole in there once.
I claim fowl!
Agreed, but someone is out there trying to buy votes for her offering cash cards to switch to R just to vote for her. The demonRats are paying for the ads to reselect her. AND most of her campaign money is coming from BLUE states.
She should never be anywhere near elected office ever again. If she truly wants to ‘serve’ people there are many other ways for her to do this, without the soapbox and stature that are the real reasons she wants to be in elected office.
CNN is turning into Capt. Obvious. Must be the new management. Let’s see what CNN does with the prime time hearings next week, or not. I’m certainly not watching.
Never understood why Cheney (D-NVa) was elected in WY anyway.
She can serve hard time for instance
Vice chair? Or chairperson of vice? There is an awful lot of ad-vice and de-vice going to waste here. All we have is vice. As in the root word of vicious.
I’ll be glad when this soap opera is over.
When is the stupid -unt’s 15 minutes up?
She can’t be in enough trouble to suit me.
She’s not in any trouble. Lib will lose her primary, run as an independent, and win, like Joe Lieberman once did.
Miss Piggy sad
I wish her Dad would take her hunting with him.
Fine, but only 20% of WY voters are registered Democrats so what good will that do her?
Watch the Dems cheat.....
Name recognition. Daddy Cheney was very popular and his daughter rode that popularity into office. However, she has angered her constituents and her political career in WY is over.
I think it is going to set a new record for lowest vote percentage by an incumbent in a primary.
They even describe how Ms. Cheney is courting Dem voters and money and that in other states Dem crossover votes helped one RINO who had voted to impeach, while the other anti-Trump RINOs lost in primaries or bailed office.
The article failed to mention that the Harriet Hageman voters are likely to be especially motivated. Far from being a "representative", Ms. Cheney spurned the wishes of her Wyo peeps, and seemed condescending in the process.
Liz Cheney's even larger problem (after losing decisively the primary election) is that her very name is now (metaphorically) toxic with a large fraction of U. S. Citizens. Such huge negatives are rarely overcome.
Don’t forget...after she gets blown out in August, she will have almost 6 months to be a nuclear level destructive force, shrieking with the Democrats about Trump, while she is still in Congress.
