One thing to keep in mind is that serious mental problems like psychosis and schizophrenia don’t generally manifest suddenly in adulthood. They are long-term conditions either linked to genetic predispositions or childhood traumas and developmental disorders (or both).

Yes, there are correlations between such disorders and recreational drug use, but the correlations are probably more due to the fact that people with those kinds of conditions tend to self-medicate, rather than the recreational drugs being the cause of their conditions. Those self-medicating can certainly exacerbate an existing condition, and there is a separate phenomenon of drug-induced psychosis, but that kind of psychosis isn’t quite the same as the permanent psychosis we associate with people on the antisocial personality spectrum.

It certainly is more potent today, because the stuff you buy at a dispensary is not “ditch weed” grown in open fields for mass production anymore, it is hybridized and selectively bred for potency, and grown in conditions meant to maximize both yield per individual plant and potency.

But the other side of that is, back when everyone bought “ditch weed”, it was much cheaper, and people would just smoke mass quantities of it until they got high. Now you can take just one or two hits and have the same effect that smoking two or three joints used to achieve. So most people are naturally going to consume less than they would before, because they just don’t need to in order to achieve the desired affect. That’s not true for everyone, of course, because some idiots will just keep smoking until their brains are totally fried. But for most people, that’s probably not their aim.

He never agreed to treatment, said we were the sick ones and we were trying to ruin his life.

Don’t forget most of these “anti-depressant drugs” (which is actually a diverse category of drugs that affect the brain in entirely different ways) also often have different side effects during withdrawal, including stuff like inducing psychotic episodes or suicidal ideations.

“and what about all the high school kids who smoked weed and didn’t turn out like that...?”

And what about all the high school kids who are “rageful” and “sulking” but never touched the devil’s weed? Which is just about every teenager that ever lived on the planet, at some point of their adolescence, as far as I can tell.

Psychotropic drugs go back to the ‘30’s...
The rampant over prescription of these things is what is responsible..

More likely psych drugs

I tend to agree, though today's weed isn't the same as back in the 70s and 80s - there is some strong stuff out there.

I am sorry for your tragic situation. Can you say how this country’s mental health care “situation” is to blame?
