I don’t think japan actually wants a problem with russia, but they are closely tied to the US in terms of the security arrangements vs. china, so they get dragged in. but they made a point of refusing to close down some energy project in russia and saying they had their own needs and would continue the project.
I think history will describe the Russian and Chicom navies as having spent more time at the bottom of the sea than on top of it.
