The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is calling on Google and Apple to ban TikTok in a bid to stop the Chinese-owned company from accessing ‘swaths of data.’
Brendan Carr, commissioner of the FCC, posted on Twitter urging the tech giants to remove the video sharing platform ‘from their app stores for its pattern of surreptitious data practices.'
Carr included a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook, expressing why TikTok needs to be removed, citing a report from last week that ‘shed fresh light on the serious national security threats posed by TikTok.
And he is giving the tech giants until July 8 to remove TikTok or explain why they chose not comply.
The report, published by BuzzFeed News, highlights leaked audio from more than 80 internal TikTok meetings that reveal China-based employees have repeatedly accessed US user data.
‘It is clear that TikTok poses an unacceptable national security risk due to its extensive data harvesting being combined with Beijing’s apparently unchecked access it that sensitive data, Carr wrote in the letter.
‘But it is also clear that TikTok’s pattern of conduct and misrepresentation regarding the unfettered access that persons in Beijing have to sensitive US user data puts it out of compliance with the policies that both of your companies require every app to adhere to as a condition of remaining available on your app store.’
DailyMail.com has contacted TikTok, Google and Apple for comment and has yet to receive a response.
The letter continues with ‘some concerning’ evidence about why the China-owned app should be removed.
This includes an incident in March 2020 when researchers discovered the app, through Apple’s App store, was accessing users’ sensitive data – passwords, cryptocurrency wallet addresses and personal messages.

It also cites TikTok's decision in 2021 to pay $92 million to settle dozens of lawsuits that accuse the app of collecting personal data without the user's consent - and most of these users were minors - and selling it off to advertisers.
NSA hates competition.
I agree with this. No way should we allow this Chinese spyware in our market. India banned it a year ago. We should ban it ASAP.
Trump did.
First thing Biden did was rescind it.
“NSA hates competition.”
Google too.
That said, this is one good thing the Biden administration has done.
Advantages? Disadvantages?
I would be instantly suspicious about downloading ANYTHING from a social media company.
[Google too.]
Google offers dozens and dozens of games promising you “free money” simply by playing on an Android phone.
Many of the “actors” in the advertisement videos are apparently from China. Oh and they all want your PayPal account info.
I only had a a few games and NEVER gave any PayPal information.
That being said, my favorite (cheap) Android phone refuses to boot now. Cycles over and over. I may have to take it in unless there’s a way to create a boot micro SD card and boot from that and repair the operating system.
It would be great for Google and Apple to publicly identify how personal information has been compromised and how they are going to prevent that from happening.
What about Zoom?
Being in the app stores, it only takes a few clicks on a phone to install. If you were to download it from a website, you would have to do something called side load the app to install it. That requires installing a file manager, granting new permissions, placing the downloaded file in the right place and then installing which takes more permissions.
The app installers can automate a lot of things and handles those permissions because it knows it’s connecting to apple’s or google’s app repositories.
I’ve side loaded an app before but I tend to be on the techie side.
The real question is, will they auto-remove tiktok as well when they pull it from the app stores. If not, people will still have their current version and not be able to update it which will eventually lead to security issues.
No one’s going to use tiktok from a browser. One of the main features is being on a phone which is totally portable. Seems like there should already be an existing replacement if all it does is take videos and place them on a central site for people to browse, search, follow people via phone or computer.
Why would Biden’s FCC want TikTok to go away?
Because the Leftist Lunatics can stop revealing their madness and it’s hurting the democrats.
School Teachers continue to post their insane antics on CRT and Gender Bending crap.
The Libs of TikTok is on Truth Social with never ending new post from the mentally ill Left.
It’s hurting the Liberal World Order advance.
Because they’re nutcases.
California government should also be banned since it purposefully exposed personal info that is being used for credit fraud of all gun permit and those who applied for a concealed gun permit.

The other thing that the app environment allows is for each app to scan the other apps on the phone, request access to contacts and camera, files, etc., but looking at the other apps and identifying your phone is basic to any app, because it needs to check for conflicts or shareable opportunities and your memory constraints, phone processor, etc.
Somehow TikTok got AUTOMATICALLY on my smart phone, along with some others. For a while I was able to delete TikTok but it would reappear in a few days. Now I can’t delete it at all. And it keeps collecting data even though I have never used it. Every few days I remove its cache.
Trump was right.
Also Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc etc
