Over the past two decades their customer base has been reduced to those wanting to get an extreme Leftwing slant. If they stop catering to their existing audience its not surprising they will lose ratings in the short term at least. It remains to be seen if they can gain a new less extreme audience going forward. I’m dubious, their reputation is pretty damaged.

Yes.
The problem is that they may initially loose bunch of lefties until they may get enough reputation back that normal people may start to watch.
I have last watched CNN about 20 years ago.
I will not watch anything there until big chunk of Freepers start approving.
