Off of San Diego...Yes. My son was launching them. He is assigned to Coast Guard Station, San Diego. He called to tell me about the hysteria about aliens invading.

Look towards mexico for that, not off of Point Loma.

This is just like the Phoenix lights from the 90’s.

Everyone claiming it was aliens, until someone took the video and superimposed the mountains on it and proved that they were indeed flares.

Flares. I’ve seen the same thing in the desert east of San Diego. At first I was sure it was an alien invasion but good sense quickly overruled panic. Later a discussion with a former Naval aerial photographer confirmed those floating bright lights in the sky were flares.

Illumination flares have parachutes that allow them to slowly float down.

Yep, when I’ve seen flares deployed off Maui they descend at a noticeable rate and scatter here and there due to air currents and turbulence.

Aerial SAR flares used by the Coast Guard are long endurance parachute flares. When you drop a pattern from an airplane or helicopter they follow the trajectory of the launching aircraft.
