Groups oppose $725M Alabama bond sale for building prisons

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A coalition of advocacy groups is opposing Alabama’s plan to sell $725 million in bonds to finance construction of two new supersize prisons.

The Communities Not Prisons coalition, a group formed to oppose the construction, and other organizations issued statements Monday opposing the looming bond sale.

The bonds would have a 2052 maturity date.

“It means that this is a project to marry our state to mass incarceration for the better part of this century. It means that Alabamians, and Black Alabamians in particular, will continue to be incarcerated and brutalized by the Alabama Department of Corrections on a breathtaking scale,” Veronica Johnson, executive director of the Alabama Justice Initiative, said in a statement.

An earlier version of the plan would have seen the state lease prisons built and owned by private companies. But that fell through after underwriters withdrew under pressure from activists to not be involved with private prison companies.

The U.S. Department of Justice has an ongoing lawsuit against the state over prison conditions.

"Black Alabamians will continue to be incarcerated and brutalized by the Alabama Department of Corrections on a breathtaking scale"

If only there were a way to stay out of prison and avoid being brutalized by the ADOC. If only...I just can't put my finger on it.

Can somebody help with this conundrum?

So what is the solution?

Maybe the convicts should be housed by the advocacy groups.

Is Veronica Johnson a racist who doesn’t think black Alabamians capable of civilized, non-criminal behavior that won’t land them in prison?

I would be opposed to spending that much money on prisons if I were a citizen of Alabama. Can’t they find a more economical way to make people do their time?

We have overcrowded prisons and the Feds are threatening the state to add more space or release prisoners.

Also, as I understand it, some of the prisons are run down and need to be replaced.

No prison is over crowed or run down. There has to be a good swamp somewhere in Alabama to handle overflow. If not, hire Sheriff Joe in AZ to take them.

Yes, very good point. It’s that ugly “Bigotry of low expectations” rearing its ugly head yet again. It’s always the liberals that believe that the poor and minorities cannot live according to civilized norms.

It starts very early. “Jamal, that assignment was made last September. Why isn’t it done?”

“Din’t have enuf time.”

OK, get it turned in by end of school...or else.”

And Jamal never turns it in (or any other assignment) and “graduates” with a 0.15 GPA.

This is true.

In a plan that fell through, the state was going to aquire (lease) hundreds of acres of farm land outside of Tallassee to build one of these prisons when the state already owns enough land around the existing Draper Correctional Facility to build the new super sized prison.

Build gallows, instead.

  1. Far less expensive construction

  2. Far lower operating costs

  3. Far greater effectiveness in reducing crime: Recidivism = ZERO...
