Kaliningrad, Russia’s Westernmost Outpost, Is Again a Flash Point in East-West Relations
NY Times ^ | June 22, 2022 | Dan Bilefsky

Posted on 06/22/2022 2:41:32 PM PDT by McGruff

A former American national security adviser once called Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave sandwiched between the NATO members Poland and Lithuania, “a dagger in the heart of Europe.”

The latest flare-up with Lithuania is not the first time Kaliningrad has been the locus of tensions.

In 2016, about 70 nautical miles off Kaliningrad, two Russian Su-24 planes buzzed the American guided missile destroyer Donald Cook, simulating an attack and drawing protests from Washington.

In another episode that same month, a Russian warplane intercepted an American reconnaissance plane at an unsafe distance over the Baltic Sea.

If you want to view them as gods in human form, that’s certainly your prerogative.

All the men in my family served, except for me.

We didn't view them as "gods in human form", you arrogant little worm.

I just know when someone can beat my ass, so I don't mouth off to them.

I notice that you don't have that sort of respect, but run your mouth because you think you're untouchable.

On the Interwebs, I always act as if I might have to say the words in person.

Notice that I have no respect for the prospect of your actual physical presence.

I could have beaten all the asses of the men in my family, though it would have been a chore. My little brother [AF/US Army] always swore he was going to grow up to be bigger than me, and give me a good pounding. Never happened. He still has dreams, though. :)

[Run your mouth on the Internet, boy - because you certainly wouldn’t do it to his face. ]

We’re shooting the breeze here and exchanging the usual good-natured insults, and here you are, going all Hamilton-Burr. Lighten up, Francis.

But I’m not surprised that someone like you is a fan of the Russians. You’d fit in well with Russia’s expeditionary force.

I’m trying to figure out the point of this tough guy posturing. If you get a charge out of fighting, there are arenas for this kind of thing. I highly recommend boxing. Or MMA.

This is a forum for discussion, not physical encounters. We are discussing the relative merits of our respective arguments, not your (probably fairly entertaining) accounts of fights with random hotheads.

I don’t think you understand. I don’t look up to military people. I view them as cops and firefighters who just happen to wear a (mostly) green uniform. I am grateful for their contributions just as I’m grateful to anyone who risks his life for the common good, salaried or not.

You, on the other hand, seem to have put soldiers on this pedestal. The problem? You never got to emulate your idols. It’s like an itch you can’t scratch. Maybe it’s time you gave in to your impulses and dragged your butt to the nearest recruiting office. Heck, given the tenor of your postings, maybe you should sign up with the VDV - the Rodina is apparently short of trained personnel. With your admirable pugnacity and fighting skills, they could really use your considerable talents.

You know what the Ukraine is? It’s a sitting duck. A road apple. The Ukraine is weak. It’s feeble. I think it’s time to put the hurt on the Ukraine. Maybe with your added contributions, the Russians could finally put this special military operation to bed.

Actually, no.

So you can take your ignorant opinion and insert it where the sun don't shine, trollboy.

It's going to be a pleasure rubbing your nose in every stupid post you've made about the Ukraine situation, after the Russians roll up Odessa and the northern Black Sea coast.

No one thought the old Russian empire would fall apart. It happened anyway. That’s the way these collapses work - slowly, then all at cone.

Let’s make a bet. A year from now, if your prediction doesn’t come true, you create a vanity post entitled “I am a poopy head”, along with the prediction that failed to materialize. If you prove to be right, I’ll create a vanity post explaining how I was wrong.

I'll create one right now:

Zhang Fei Is A Trolling Poopy Head

We're done here, I think.

I’ll take that as a rejection of the challenge. I don’t blame you. I don’t see the Russians overrunning Odessa either. The best they can do is maybe complete their conquest of the Donbass.

The West is slowly but surely giving Ukraine the firepower it needs to turn the tide. Whether the Ukrainians want to make the sacrifices necessary is up to them. But as long as they are willing to fight, the West will, grudgingly and haltingly, hand over some of what is necessary for them to advance. Whether they can make up the difference, we’ll see soon enough.

My view is that the military is just another tool of government. Its job is to do as it’s told and fight the nation’s wars. That’s all there is to it. If you want to view them as gods in human form, that’s certainly your prerogative. What view of the military would you consider non-juvenile?

NATO is going to drag us into war whether we like it or not.
—————
Possible, but the Ukies have lost, the EU economy on the rocks, economy totally destroyed on life support ( with US taxpayers money) their military draining last of reserves, desperation….Donbass is lost, should NATO escalate, they to are toast and know once they shoot their wad, replacements of manpower and equipment shipped thousands of miles to the EU theatre is unrealistic.

I know, been there witnessed the Cold War annual war games back at the height of the Cold War- ( 1970’s) we now have nothing pre-positioned in Europe-when Ukraine folds- and it has, I look for it to be carved up and just resulting in another Biden Afghanistan massive failure.

IF Vlad chooses to eat Odessa, it is the end of the Ukies, forever. Problems solved.

The Russians are winning in Ukraine. Why post this drivel?
———
The Biden war cheerleaders must keep our money flowing, the non western media is reporting much truth, Ukie defeat after defeat, contrary to the western fake news. I do believe the corrupted little beggar Zelensky will be ousted as even the Ukie social media is crying out to stop the war- the beggar is hell bent on destroying his own country.

The Ukies are now admitting losses of 6,000 a month, our Vietnam losses were not even that high.

"To me, folks in the military are like cops and firefighters, except they wear green/tan uniforms. The nice thing about cops and firefighters is that we don’t generally get any back talk when we point them at crooks and fires. I wish military people were as consistent.

You and I are often on the same page - but not this time: There is absolutely no comparison between "cops and firefighters" and the folks in the US Armed Forces. The cops can ignore civilians being killed (Columbine, Parkland, Uvalde) and firefighters rarely get killed fighting fires but the people wearing the "green/tan uniforms" fight and often die or are maimed during their duty. Try over 400 killed in one week in 1966 (or 6,000 killed in one month in 1945).

There are no people in this country as ready to give their lives for others as completely as our soldier and Marines, capiche?

I completely agree that military is a cut above, in terms of risks they take. And anyone who’s served in wartime - especially the draftees, some of whom could have run to Canada, and especially the Canadians who crossed the border to serve in Vietnam - thank you for your service - my hat’s off to you.

What I don’t appreciate is military people trying to pull rank on civilians. Military people, like cops and firefighters, are government employees whose job is to do what they are told by the people through their elected representatives. They are not aristocrats who get to tell us what to do. It is not their place to belittle the very people whose employees they are.
