MOSCOW, June 22 (Reuters) - A top Russian official warned the West on Wednesday to stop talking about triggering NATO's "Article 5" mutual defence clause in a standoff between Lithuania and Russia.
Moscow has promised practical retaliation that will affect Lithuania's population after the Baltic state blocked the transit of goods subject to EU sanctions from Russia to its Baltic exclave.
"I would like to warn Europeans against dangerous rhetorical games on the topic of conflict," the Interfax news agency quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying on Wednesday.

Or Biden doing something extraordinarily foolish.
A decision to take on Ukraine and a decision to take on NATO are not comparable decisions
Rather amusing given Russia’s constant threats about war and nukes. I believe one of Putin’s buddies in the Duma or foreign ministry was threatening more shoe banging at the podium.
Maybe the train blockade is the first step toward deNazification and liberation of Kaliningrad.
The stated policy by the president of the US is regime change in Moscow. Do you have any idea what article 5 is? When NATO saber rattles Art. 5 NATO is threatening an attack upon Russia by the entirety of NATO. Yeah, Putin will sit by when some border dispute results in a preemptive attack on Russia by 30 NATO countries. Like I say, you and the big guy invoke Art. 5 and march on Moscow since Putin can’t do anything. Or more likely, dipshitery, like saber rattling Art. 5, starts WWIII.
...you mean Koenigsberg!
Sri Lanka is hard up for cash now. Maybe we can hire a bunch of them as mercs to roll in there like an ewok army.
Remember the Berlin airlift
I’m a Putinesta, according to many anti-anything-Russian freaks here on FR. But I believe that Putin and Russia have been engaged in a little dangerous rhetorical games on the topic of conflict themselves. Hypocrisy is running rampant these days, and not just in DC.
Too late for that, probably.
Although in my town selling the house takes about 15 minutes. It’s the “getting out of Dodge” that takes longer.
I’m already checking out Florida properties on Zillow. Sell my house by fall. then pick up something down there when prices start dropping after the first of the year. We might even experience a grid attack ourselves and I don’t want to be in upstate NY should that happen in the middle of winter.
Putin has a lot of little fires to put out. Big ones too. It seems like all of NATO is ganging up on the skumbag.
“The US is itching to get NATO involved.”
If NATO had wanted to go to war with Russia it would have done so in the late 1990s, when Russia was at its most vulnerable.
“That’s one of those “threats” that everyone hopes they actually make good on.”
Yeah, under Erdogan Turkey has pretty much outlived its usefulness to NATO and the West.
However, there are elections on the horizon and Erdogan isn’t doing so well domestically.
Here is the big Florida ripoff of new comers on property taxes. You buy a house in Florida and you will pay full taxes. While your next door neighbor, in an identical house, might be paying half of that.
Why? Because he bought his house in 2008-2011 when real estate prices were way down in FL. So his house started it tax assessment career at that low base price. From there, by FL law, his taxes can only increase 1-2% maximum per year. Same for you from where you start when you buy in.
“If Turkey pulls out of NATO then they will align with Russia, closing off the Bosporus Strait to NATO, a huge disadvantage if we go against Russia.”
Under Erdogan, yes. But let’s see how the upcoming Turkish elections go. Erdogan isn’t doing so well domestically, and his main opponent is Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the CHP (Republican People’s Party), Kemal Atatürk’s old party. He is more of a secularist than Erdogan, and if he follows Ataturk’s mindset he will not be so antagonistic towards the West. He has an economics background and is seen as more pragmatic than Erdogan. I guess we’ll see if he wins next year.
The world is becoming one big powder keg.
