DeSantis Vs. Hated GOP Establishment

This part of the New Yorker‘s profile of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is saying the quiet part out loud:

For decades, the Democratic Party had commanded a majority of Florida’s registered voters. But the state was changing, as Trump’s election helped energize a shift in political affinities. The Republican Party’s rank and file became increasingly radical, and G.O.P. leaders appeared only too happy to follow them. “There was always an element of the Republican Party that was batshit crazy,” Mac Stipanovich, the chief of staff to Governor Bob Martinez, a moderate Republican, told me. “They had lots of different names—they were John Birchers, they were ‘movement conservatives,’ they were the religious right. And we did what every other Republican candidate did: we exploited them. We got them to the polls. We talked about abortion. We promised—and we did nothing. They could grumble, but their choices were limited.

“So what happened?” Stipanovich continued. “Trump opened Pandora’s box and let them out. And all the nasty stuff that was in the underbelly of American politics got a voice. What was thirty-five per cent of the Republican Party is now eighty-five per cent. And it’s too late to turn back.”

Use of political tags is always subjective! The LEFT moves the goalposts and the eGOP shrugs and accommodates but WE NO LONGER WILL DO SO!

This is of course the voice of the RINO Establishment. I have exactly the opposite perspective. There was always a wing of the Republican party that could be classified as snobby, elitist, globalist, war mongering, country club, corporate shills. They were never a majority but they were highly influential among the donor class.

For decades they said all the right things come campaign season but once elected, immediately stabbed their voters in the back every single time. They claimed to be Conservatives yet they conserved absolutely nothing. They would always roll over for their Democrat buddies at the country club quietly telling them not to worry and that they would never be so beastly and crude as to actually do any of the things they promised their voters they would do. They shared all the same contempt for the average American that elitist Democrats had. They had all the same biases and bigotry eg, they’re stupid, backward, racist, sexist, etc etc they don’t know what’s best for themselves and we the elites must order them around for their own good.

After several revolts against the RINO Establishment - Pat Buchanan in the 90s, the Tea Party, etc - American patriots finally found a leader in Donald Trump. The RINO Establishment did what it usually does and promptly stabbed him and the voters in the back, culminating in the stolen election of 2020. They thought they had seen off yet another revolt. Little did they realize that would not be the case this time. Having seen that it really was possible for someone they elected to actually do the things he promised on the campaign trail, MAGA voters are striking back at the RINO Establishment.

Trump is far outpacing the Republican party for campaign donations and several RINOs have already lost their primaries in the first chance the voters have had to speak since the Steal. More of the wrath of MAGA is to come and the RINOs know it.

and by the way 2024 is Trump’s 2nd term. DeSantis’ first term starts in 2028.

Trump is a master of the Overton Window. The Left likes moving the goalposts to the left? OK, then, let's talk about moving the goalposts on our side further right.

They want to impose gun control? We talk about eliminating 4473 record keeping, or at least purging records more than a year old, in order to not facilitate confiscation. We talk about changing the laws to reduce legal risks to self-defense. Etc.

“We promised . . . and did nothing”. This really sums up the Bush era in Republican politics. While campaigning and you need our votes, say anything. After securing election, throw your promises in the trash and trash the people who elected you so you can go back to being thought of well, or at least tolerated by the “people with class”. John Podhoretz had been a speechwriter for GHW Bush - for his farewell speech, Podhoretz wrote that Bush instructed him to not include “any of that conservative junk”. We had two wonderful presidents in Reagan and Trump; and two abject failures in the Bushes.

Mac Stipanovich, hmmmm? A more loyal, card-carrying member of the establishment GOP (aka "democrats lite") would be hard to find. Whenever a political creature like him starts whining, you know something good is happening.

The other day I did read the article in the New Yorker that is mentioned here, and found it to be actually quite informative, once one reads past the intrinsic fear and loathing one would expect from such a source.

The establishment, both dem and GOP, has an existential fear Ron DeSantis, for all the same reasons that we support him so highly.

I’m good with whatever, but I think that is what will occur.

I don’t think DeSantis would run against Trump. I think he knows he would likely lose, and it would hurt his “stock” for the future. DeSantis is a smart guy.

Bush 1 & 2 were not failures. They did exactly what their class believes in. They truly despise the working lower middle class and missle class white people. Jorge W was even explicit in stating he liked Mexicans a lot more than those difficult, onery white Texans that really believed they were just as good as the anointed upper class. Rich Texans often really do feel that way. They would have loved the Mexico of Porfirio Diaz.

I don’t know why anyone would look at Ron DeSantis and see him as anything but an Establishment Republican. An Ivy League lawyer turned career politician is not the kind of person who really inspires any confidence as an anti-establishment political figure.

I think it’s the wisest decision.

1. The nomination is Trump’s if he wants it.
2. There will be a slog through economic pain for some years.
3. 2028 the economy should be humming by then...one hopes.
4. DeSantis will be better known and more experienced.

Maybe they, and other elites, are heavily invested in China and don’t want to see it fail.

I have long thought that one rare aspect of Trump’s wealth is that it came from construction. Buildings are hard to move and you build for where you live. That is not true for, say, a Tesla.

I heard the same thing from Texans about some dope named George W. Bush in the late 1990s.
