When four-time world champion Formula 1 racing driver Sebastian Vettel denounced Alberta’s oilsands as a “climate crime” prior to Sunday’s Montreal Grand Prix, he revealed his brain is an irony-free zone.
Gas-guzzling Formula 1 racing would not exist without fossil fuels.
Vettel’s racing team is sponsored by Saudi Aramco — the world’s largest oil and natural gas company.
Aramco is owned by the government of Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s most brutal dictatorships, which also sponsors Formula 1 racing itself .
The 34-year-old German-born Vettel is a poster child for celebrities who denounce the oilsands, conveniently overlooking the reality that without fossil fuel energy their vocations would not exist.
He may sport a T-shirt bearing the slogan “Stop mining tar sands — Canada’s climate crime,” plus show off an anti-oilsands racing helmet for the Montreal Grand Prix (where he finished in 12th place, wearing a different helmet), but if he really believes his rhetoric, he should quit driving for Formula 1.
As Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage tweeted in response to Vettel’s denunciation of the oilsands:
“I have seen a lot of hypocrisy over the years, but this one takes the cake. A race car driver sponsored by Aston Martin, with financing from Saudi Aramco, complaining about the oilsands.
“Saudi Aramco has the largest daily oil production of all companies in the world. It is reputed to be the single largest contributor to global carbon emissions, of any company, since 1965.
“Rather than demonizing the oilsands, which is on a path to net-zero, people could look to lowering their own personal carbon footprint. Perhaps a pedal-car for Formula 1?”
Even Vettel admitted his own hypocrisy, in responding to Savage’s criticism saying: “Yes, I am a hypocrite doing what I do for a living or doing what I love. We all have different passions, this is the way I sort of paint my canvas.”
Spoken like every globe-trotting politician who decries climate change while leaving a carbon footprint in their wake that could choke a horse, every celebrity who denounces fossil fuels while vacationing on a yacht and every government bureaucrat and UN diplomat attending never-ending, climate change conferences in the world’s vacation hotspots while staying in five-star hotels, all-expenses paid.
In every case, what these people do puts the lie to what they say.
If they really believe climate change poses an imminent, existential threat to humanity, then they should walk the walk, not just talk the talk while subscribing to the philosophy of “rules for thee, but not for me” when it comes to climate change.
Vettel said of Savage’s criticism, “I think it’s disappointing that we break it down to a personal level and miss to look at the bigger picture.
“What’s really important is the message that we need to make the switch and get out of fossil (fuels) and start to base our whole lifestyle on renewables. So I think that’s the bigger picture stuff that I’m trying to address.”
Terrific. Then Vettel can address it by refusing to work for any racing team sponsored by Saudi Aramco and retire from the Formula 1 circuit unless it ends its deal with the world’s largest oil and natural gas company.
That would be a far more significant gesture than dropping into Canada for a Grand Prix race and calling for the end of an industry employing 140,000 Canadians.
Maybe we get the Saudis and others to pump themselves dry, then the US, Canada, and others will have all of the remaining oil to then dig up.
I hope he crashes with Lewis Hamilton…
His passion is being a woke hypocrite
The Global warming scam is funded by SA, UAE and Qatar.
China knows. They are still building Coal Power plants.
It’s not like the oil sands can grow anything
EXACTLY WHAT other usage is there for these ‘oil sands’???
What he calls a climate crime, I call a gift from nature.
It is such a shame these great drivers are so stupid.
F1 ping.
BTW- when Vettel travels the world for F1 races, he doesn’t fly commercial. This is the same guy who had a temper tantrum in the middle of the Baku race a few years ago and tried to bang another driver (Hamilton) off the course.
FTGuy...
A dimwit.
See. That is the thing about Leftists.
They all think that when everyone follows their "advice", the world economy collapses, and we run out of both food and fuel, that THEY will be the ones who will go on pursuing their loves and passions, that the money and fame will keep rolling in, that they will be part of the privileged classes.
That THEY will be the Inner Party Members. ALL of them feel that way, without exception.
And they are the ones who scream the loudest and most hysterically as they are being dragged away by those they were Useful Idiots for:
"Why are you doing this? Why? I'm on your side! I'm one of you! I'M ONE OF YOU!!!"
If (when?) I’m breaking rocks in a labor camp some time in the near future, it wouldn’t surprise me to see somebody like Julie Roginsky or Marie Harf in there with me, saying, “I supported these people! I worked on their behalf!”
Vettel has no character and no self respect.
They are mentally ill.
And you know what? Even in a labor camp, they would STILL support those who put them there.
Solzhenitsyn saw it in the Gulags from people who Stalin put there...they KNEW it was Stalin who put them there, but still they cried real tears when he died.
Not doubting per se, but could you find this one? 2014 was the last year DannyRic and Vettel were at Red Bull together, and I don’t see any Seb victories that year.

Seb’s always been a jerk, but then look at Hamilton and his BLM crap and whining which IMO soils the rep of a driver who’s otherwise done exceptionally well.
Better he rails against oil sands rather than unter mensche ...
Oh the true believers shouted Long Live Stalin as their last words before they were executed. They often felt their arrest conviction and sentence was all a big mistake and Stalin had nothing to do with it. Deluded to the very end.
If globull warming and rising ocean levels are such a dire crises why are oceanfront properties in higher demand than ever? Don’t see the 0bama’s in any hurry to evacuate their mansion on Mahtha’s Vineyahhd. Fredo Cuomo got that mansion just steps away from Fire Island beach, apparently he ain’t ready to sell and head for the hills.
Sounds like nothing a few good ass-kickin's wouldn't fix.
(Shut up and drive!)
