Germany in particular was quite hostile to the idea of bringing more North American gas into Europe to wean them off Russian supplies. Said it was a stupid idea and that they didn’t have any need for it.

They still don’t have a need for US gas as Russia is PERFECTLY HAPPY to continue selling them gas per their contracts (i.e., cheap).
