Yes, the media got away with oodles and oodles of fabrication - before the internet - a very limited few were even able to check any ‘facts’ before being bulldozed. Same with Roe v Wade, evolution, Kinsey’s sex studies, Federal Reserve, income and property tax, etc.
Same battle many people have been fighting (including me) regarding Joseph McCarthy, who was slandered with even less real justification than Richard Nixon.
Felt not only betrayed Nixon, He also betrayed the intelligence community including the Association of Former Intelligence Officers, then led by my new acquaintance David Phillip Atlee, firmer station chief for the CIA in Latin America.
AFIO had put their organization’s support behind him. Got stabbed in the back for it.
Also remember that Carl Red Diaper Baby Bernstein’s parents were hardcore Communist Party members whose activities he was proud of. Guess he liked treason!
