People on this forum keep repeating that Chechens are somehow foreign fighters with respect to Russia. Chechnya is a federal subject of Russia. It has always been so in the days of the modern RF, and it was so even during the war when Russia “invaded Chechnya”. Chechens are all Russian citizens. Most of these fighters are part of the Russian national guard (not regular army) but are still legitimate national fighters. I’m not the biggest fan of that nation, but we look silly repeating incurrent information on FR.

“That nation” == Chechnya as a “nation” with respect to the people.

Remember Gary Powers. There will at least be a show trial. Hopefully for these fighters who wanted to be heroes, if they’re lucky, Putin will trade them for concessions from the US and Britain.

Wiki says that CIA pilot Gary Powers was convicted of espionage but spent less than two years in a central prison because he and another person were exchanged for a KGB colonel. Our government was afraid that he would spill more secret info that he had. The question about these volunteer captives is, how important are they?

If they are there as Syrian Government allies of the Russians then they should be accorded POW status if captured. The Chechens fighting on both sides are a little bit different since it is unclear exactly why they are fighting and who they are answering to. Some may qualify as mercenaries in a technical sense.

I was told that they are not part of the Russian military, by kadyrov’s own.

They are not part of the Russian military the same way that the National Guard is not part of the main US military. The analogy is almost identical...they are part of the Chechen division of Rosgvardia. Kadryov is their CIC as the governors are the CICs of the US state guard units.

From what I can find, the kadarovskys are kadarov’s personal protection paramilitary, not part of the Russian federation forces.
They are under control of the Wagner Group.
Putin allowed kadyrov to keep his personal militia, after he bought his loyalty in the chechen war.
As I said, some here, are outraged that there are foreign volunteers in the Ukraine military but have no problem wiith paid mercenaries working for the invading military.

They are volunteers. The fact Russia cannot and will not make a distinction between volunteers and mercenaries illustrates their lack of appreciation of universal principals, international conventions of war and the truth.

Bull, Russia is following the Law of War. These two guys are unlawful/illegal combatants. They have no rights.

“Bull, Russia is following the Law of War. These two guys are unlawful/illegal combatants. They have no rights.”

Russia is NOT following the Law of War in Ukraine or with these prisoners. Contrary to Russia’s Propaganda their prisoners do have rights. Just as foreign citizens in the US Army have the rights as US soldiers.

They are members of the UAF. It is because Russia is a lawless autocracy with no respect for international law or moral convention that they have chosen to declare (narrate) volunteers to be mercenaries soley so they can be punished. This is abundantly clear to the whole world now which is why the whole world (except Iran, North Korea and China) is against Russia.

Not in the US military, all commissioned officers by statute must be USA citizens. Has been since, well, ever.

There was a period where duality wasn’t argued, but in 2004 or so, DOD made it the defacto policy. Forswear any and all duality or be separated. I was an ROTC cadre at the time, some wannabees walked, only to find the govt recouping tuition once they quit.

Not in the US military, all commissioned officers by statute must be USA citizens. Has been since, well, ever.

This applies only to a commission in the Regular Army, Navy, etc., as per 10 U.S. Code § 532. It differs for a commission in a reserve component:

§12201. Reserve officers: qualifications for appointment

(a)(1) To become an officer of a reserve component a person must be appointed as a Reserve of an armed force in a grade corresponding to a grade authorized for the regular component of the armed force concerned and, except as provided in paragraph (2), subscribe to the oath prescribed by section 3331 of title 5. In addition, to become an officer of the Army National Guard of the United States or the Air National Guard of the United States, he must first be appointed to, and be federally recognized in, the same grade in the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard, as the case may be.

(2) If an officer is transferred from the active-duty list of an armed force to a reserve active-status list of an armed force in accordance with regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense, the officer is not required to subscribe to the oath referred to in paragraph (1) in order to qualify for an appointment under that paragraph.

(b) Except as otherwise provided by law, the Secretary concerned shall prescribe physical, mental, moral, professional, and age qualifications for the appointment of persons as Reserves of the armed forces under his jurisdiction. However, no person may be appointed as a Reserve unless he is at least 18 years of age and—

(1) he is a citizen of the United States or has been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence under the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1101 et seq.); or

(2) he has previously served in the armed forces or in the National Security Training Corps.
