(Because THAT is how you build a self-sustaining empire!)
“But the question remains, would you reach out to someone for a character reference years after communication has ended? “
It depends of course, it seems that a general rule would be the more remote in time that the person was in your employ, the less valuable the reference - from the hiring firm’s perspective. There are exceptions, but it would be important to figure out given the long elapse of time whether the reference is now based on a continuing friendship rather than workplace relationship.
The person you described appear to be a “user” and his response is a definite loser. There is a side of him you finally got to see. He’s lucky you weren’t as candid as he was with his prospective employer.
I have seen plenty of these types over nearly 4 decades of working and hiring in a multinational. In your case, I would have returned the prospective employer’s call as a courtesy and told them what you wrote to the Mr Opportunist, ... that you no longer are in a position to be a relevant reference given the passage of time and loss of contact.
While we all have our styles of writing, I would not have used the words “no longer comfortable” when you gave him a courtesy of informing him you could no longer be considered a reference. Discomfort is too emotional a word. I would have been drier, thanking him for thinking of you as a reference, but given the passage of time, it is no longer feasible. You are sure based on his experience that he understands this and you wish him nothing but luck in his endeavors. The less said, the better.
In the end, you did the right thing. Way to go!
I’d go right up to you and tell you what I think of blacks, Chinamen, Indians and queers etc. etc and dare you to rat me out for it. You sound like a virtue signaling snitch
Just wait, people have lost faith in the government they’ve lost faith in our Konomi and now all over the world are losing faith in the dollar. Pretty soon these political animals will be wearing a Bread sign looking for food and they won’t be so political then.
cause they’ve never been smacked upside the head!
my daddy taught me young, you never talk religion or politics in a bar or at work unless you’re all on the same side...
Solution? Don’t hire them.
You are right about the word “comfortable.” If I could have changed one thing that would have been it. :)
The only one you cannot mention is religion. Everything else is fair game.
In my personal experience, it’s much easier to work with Millenials and Gen Z, at least in the tech sector. Older tech folks tend to be dogmatic, unwilling to learn new skills without going to a “training course” and consider anything beyond 40 hrs a week to be slave labor. Not in all cases, but as long as we’re generalizing.
The problem with this "don't do at work" mantra is that in the current environment, EVERYTHING is "political." You can't have benign, pleasant, even private conversations while working or while on break, using standard English and a wide vocabulary, about current events, culture, history, family, life in general--ANYTHING--without being attacked as (fill in the blank, you know the adjectives), and without incurring significant risk of being disciplined, fired, or "cancelled."
Not only do I not want to hire these losers, we’re getting closer and closer to not letting them even volunteer with us where I work. If a person under 30 isn’t a member of an unassimilated dissident community (say, Mennonite/Amish, a homeschooler, or from a conservative immigrant community), I don’t want to deal with them any longer. It has been too many headaches.
my daughter just interviewed a young lady for a position.
Even though they told her she was required to be on site before she arrived for the interview, she argued that the job could be done remotely.
No, you can’t stay home. The girl refused the position.
She’s been home at mommys for the last 2 years, she does not want to leave her house.
Plus she showed up in yoga pants for the interview. Not a yoga studio.
Biden’s minions will see this thread and the comments and push through a bill making discrimination based on being woke a federal death penalty offense. However, Discrimination against the Non-Woke will not be a crime
Sounds like a typical immature response. You did the right thing —obviously. The dude has a hard time handling life when it doesn’t go his way.
Can you imagine acting like that ever? They are so spoiled and disrespectful. I’m’ sure her mother was dying to get her out of the house.
“notice to new employees”
“I do not hire you for your political or religious ideas.
I hire you to perform the task you competed, and were chosen and hired to do.
Should a problem arise concerning you, I do not house problems.
There is no arbitration, just expulsion.
Your employment history will end at the time of decision, and will be kept on file for 7 years, as per legal precedence.
So, do your contracted work well, and we will all profit.
oh no. I took all my job obligations seriously even when i was a teen.
This girl in question just graduated from George Washington U. No hurry to put that degree to use.
I have no patience for this.
Getting fired and living on uncooked ramen noodles in a walmart parking lot will change their woke attitude fast.
And no, these noodle-arm weenies don’t have the combat training or experience to take over America.
As a wimmin, she can always marry an atm beta cuck.
Guys dont have that option. No one lines up to take care of men, they gotta do it themselves. Never seen a woman excited at the prospect of dating a broke unemployed boyfriend.
