Michigan man loses both arms after bomb explodes in his garage

"WARREN, Mich. – Police say that a man who was injured Saturday when a bomb exploded at his Warren home lost one of his hands and suffered burns on more than half of his body.

Editor’s note: Police said on Monday that the man lost both of his arms in the explosion. They later said that was incorrect. The story has been updated to reflect the change."

Years ago in OChem lab, we were doing nitrations with Con Sulfuric acid. One of the other students had lubricated the fittings with glycerin. When the professor noticed some oily yellow substance floating on the surface of the reaction flask he stopped everything, evacuated the entire lab, carefully disassembled the entire apparatus and safely disposed of the nitroglycerin.
