Senate negotiators reach framework deal on bipartisan gun package

WASHINGTON — Key senators announced a framework agreement on new gun legislation Sunday, marking a breakthrough on a collection of measures to combat gun violence, including “red flag” laws and enhanced background checks on buyers.

The chief negotiators of the deal are Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., an outspoken proponent of gun safety laws, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a firm Second Amendment advocate who has promised the new measures won’t impact the gun rights of law-abiding Americans. The final bill hasn’t been written yet, sources familiar with the negotiations said.

“Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country,” Murphy, Cornyn and other senators involved in the talks said in a joint statement. “Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities.”

Unlike the Democratic-authored series of gun bills that passed the House last week, the Senate deal has a good chance of becoming law because it is expected to have support from key Republicans, who wield effective veto power over gun legislation in the Senate due to the 60-vote filibuster rule.

A centerpiece of the Senate deal is substantial resources for states to implement “red flag” laws, which allow individuals like police or family members to petition courts to keep firearms away from people deemed a risk to themselves or others.

I mean, you’re either in favor of some regulation of firearms, or you’re in favor of absolutely no regulation. If you’re in favor of no regulation, that means you’re in favor of:

- Felons being able to purchase and carry guns.
- Anyone being able to purchase fully automatic weapons (which used to be the case in our country).
- Minors, even 5-year olds, being able to purchase firearms.

I’m not in favor of any of the things above, which necessarily means I’m in favor of some gun regulation. If you are, I certainly respect your opinion, but I disagree with you.

Grow up and knock of the name calling when another FReeper does not agree precisely with what you do.

Do better.

Yes, but red flag laws are needed. It will be up to us and future generations to ensure it does not get abused.

It will be abused. My father is completely brainwashed. He truly believes a gun is capable of running around the house on its own and killing you in your sleep.

If he knew I owned guns he would immediately try to Red Flag me because he would be convinced his grandchildren would be slaughtered if he didn't.

Nothing will change his mind. He's starting to lose it, but he's not as bad a Biden yet. One phone call and my life would become hell.

Find a better analogy.

There is very little the local Texas party can do to a senator, even if it has the will to do anything (which is doubtful).

He does need to be censured.

Perhaps strip him of all support from the local party; make it where he can’t fund raise in the state.

If a 13 yr old has the money to do that.

IF you have the money and your locale has no prohibitions, you too can have one. 😁

It’s a fine analogy.

Currently, it’s illegal for a 13 year old to buy a firearm.

That law is a regulation of firearms - there is no argument that it isn’t.

You’re either in favor or opposed to that law regulating firearms - it’s a yes/no question.

If you support a law that says it’s illegal for a 13-year old to buy a firearm, you support at least some regulation of firearms, like I do.

SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!

That is still the law of the land. Trespassing is a crime.
Trespassing on rights is a crime against humanity.

I understand that grandfathered fully automatic firearms can still be purchased through the NFA process.

My point was that it’s currently illegal to sell private people brand new fully-automatic weapons (i.e., a fully-automatic firearm that was manufactured in 2022). It’s also illegal for a 13-year old to buy a firearm.

I support both of those laws even though I’m a strong Second Amendment defender and believe all law-abiding adults of sound mind should be able to carry concealed or open firearms. It’s not a zero-sum game.

Your straw man arguments are a tired old saw of the anti-gun left. Stuff it!

They’re not strawman arguments, I’m not anti-gun and I’m not left. But no one seems to want to actually respond, just throw around insults. Your choice, have a nice day.

Felons have lost their rights by due process.

Minors have very restricted rights because they are minors. That's why they can't participate in contracts, can't vote, can't make legal decisions for themselves and a variety of other things without permission from a parent or legal guardian.

Tired leftist straw man arguments are null and void.

All true, but the laws I mentioned are restrictions on firearms, not the other way around.

It’s legal for a felon to buy a new TV at Best Buy. But the felon can’t buy a firearm.

It’s legal for a minor to buy a bag of candy at a gas station. But the minor can’t buy a firearm.

The restrictions are firearm-specific and are therefore firearm regulations. I support these regulations, and I also support the right of law-abiding adults to buy and carry firearm.

That’s not how red flag laws work ANYWHERE.

Florida has the most used Red Flag law in the nation (It’s been used about 9000 times since it was enacted, in a State with 21 million people and in a State with A LOT of gun owners.)

Read through how it works:

http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0700-0799/0790/Sections/0790.401.html

It isn’t as simple as someone making a phone call and saying that you have guns.

That doesn’t mean that these things are good or should be enacted, but the caricature version of these laws that people envision are simply fantasy.

Yet again, media and politicians have refused to focus on the obvious profile of a particular kind of young men. Such young men (Dark Triad) avoid proper psychological evaluations with their mothers' help. More ex-husbands/boyfriends struggling to make a living will be disarmed instead. Not all such men are criminals, and many will continue to work towards having property and influence.

Anarchist behaviors and influence will become more popular in every line of work including those involving security. We're seeing a trend towards a more brutal version of Havel's "nonpolitical politics"... The fantasy that ingenuity can be weeded out of these western culture populations to insure increased control is an error.

Another very related and widespread error:

Same. My parents are in the early stages of dementia. My mother is particular has become a paranoid lunatic who think that conservatives are nazis (means it literally). I know my mother will “red flag” me if she hears about it. She won’t even consider that most of these will result in the murder of everyone in a household. Cops will do midnight raids, amped up to the hilt and ready to shoot anything that makes a squeek.
