The ruling isn’t as outlandish as it seems. There was never any dispute about whether the ballots were received on time, and from what I’ve read it seems that the court ruled this way because the PA statute regarding a date on the ballot envelope says nothing about WHICH date is to be written there.

The turning point in this case was when it came to light that some PA election officials followed the law meticulously and rejected ballots with undated envelopes while accepting ballots with clownish dates like “July 4, 1776” and “December 7, 1941” written on them.

Those dates are historical event dates important to this republic, not clownish dates.
