McCarthy says 'everybody in the country' bears responsibility for Jan. 6 attack

As the Jan. 6 select committee prepares to unveil some of the findings of its investigation into the riot at the Capitol by those who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Thursday offered his spin on who was to blame for the attack: everyone.

During a news conference on Capitol Hill, McCarthy was asked whether he still agreed with his own public and private comments following the Jan. 6 riot that former President Donald Trump bore some of the responsibility for the violence.

“Look, I’ve answered that many times,” McCarthy responded. “I thought everybody in the country [bore] some responsibility based on what has been going on — the riots in the streets, the others." (He has made similar claims in the past.)

The attack itself was committed by a mob of then-President Donald Trump's supporters, who stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the Electoral College. So far, 306 of the 860 charged in connection with the riot have pleaded guilty. A number of Capitol Police officers were assaulted during attack, which followed Trump holding a nearby rally and urging his fans to “fight like hell” on behalf of his false claim that the election was stolen.

McCarthy’s comment was an apparent reference to the protests that gripped the country following the police killings of Black Americans in several cities in 2020. The violence that occurred in those demonstrations has provided Republicans with a line of argument to suggest that the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol was simply part of a larger pattern.

>> Now we’re all guilty.

That’s the only way Trump can be considered responsible, if there is collective guilt.

The Lightning beat the Rangers. That was by far more important than anything happening at the star chamber hearing.

If I was in a foxhole and the enemy was bearing down, I’d rather have Pelosi in the foxhole, armed and on my side, than McCarthy. Pelosi fights and she is more of a man than McCarthy.

Giuliani went after Hunter and got raided for saying his name.

He was in an island at that time.

Respect for Giuliani.

I agree with you with the exception of Mayor Giuliani. I voted for him for president when he ran. And he was amazing for NYC (made it a nice city) and in 9-11. Sharp as a tack and full of common sense and is the very definition of leadership. And I’ve never even been in NY.

Giuliani was out of his league in defending against the fraud, and should have choked himself. Trump kept him in charge out of loyalty. I’ll consider removing Flynn - thanks.

He never turned on Trump and his counsel was good. Not everything works out when facing a tsunami.

Flynn was also loyal. Still is and has a pretty hard core view of everything that’s happened.

McCarthy is a spineless POS and has to go NOW! This is not the time for political cowards or cowardice.

The American soldiers I met in Jam weren’t like this weasel. They were brave, smart fighters who took the fight to the enemy, not to a tea and crumpets picnic.

Get rid of this politically coward mushy termite before he gets Biden re-elected.

My point with Guliani (and I was in NYC on 9/11 so I admire him greatly) was he was out of his league in prosecuting the election results. Trump kept him on out of loyalty - that’s a bad blind spot.

Prosecuting the election results? I have a little secret to tell you, the whole thing was rigged.

Don’t tell anyone else.

Is your disagreement over the inclusion of Guliani in the list of Trump’s bad personnel selections, or that Trump’s HR decisions is his Achilles?

Yes Trump should have had planeloads of lawyers like Bush did in 2000 flying into Florida. Planeloads. But he only had Giuliani. Not enough and also he’s 100 years old or whatever. Still sharp but not enough….compared to what Bush had at his disposal in 2000.

If McCarthy means that A GREAT NUMBER OF AMERICANS BELIEVED THAT THE ELECTION WAS STOLEN... then he is right.

And now, even MORE AMERICANS FIRMLY BELIEVE THE ELECTION WAS STOLEN WITH “WIDESPREAD FRAUD.”

Read THAT, Washington Post, et al.
