HAVANA, Cuba — Marco put his home up for sale, a concrete, one-bedroom house outside the Cuban capital, just blocks from the beach. He's hoping to sell almost everything he has to fund the journey out of Cuba.
"Everything is for sale. ... Everything," he says.
Marco doesn't want to use his full name because he's afraid he could face government repercussions for talking about his plans to leave the country.
If he gets out, he'll become the latest in the largest wave of Cubans to leave the island in decades. Many are trying to cross by land from Mexico to the United States. In April alone, U.S. authorities recorded more than 35,000 Cuban nationals at the U.S. southwest border — almost as many as the entire 2021 fiscal year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. They're fleeing mainly because Cuba is struggling through a steep economic downturn.

One real estate broker in Havana describes the housing market as "fishing season," because so much property is up for sale.
He asks to be identified only as Alfredo, so he can speak freely about his work. Alfredo sells everything in U.S. dollars and all transactions take place outside Cuba. He has more than 2,000 listings available.
"If on one block there are 24 houses, 20 of them are for sale. And the other four are considering selling," he says, "no lie!"

And the Cuban government could just steal it again. Any “ownership” should just be considered a lease of unknown duration.
Can we Force Hollywood and all the Jesters to relocate to Cuba??
The minute the Communists are thrown out, Cuban beachfront real estate will go through the roof.
Ok. So we parachute in with our retirement nest eggs. A whole fixer-upper country. People get put to work making a lot more than the $26/mo an MD makes down there. Does it change anything? We become financial imperialists as opposed to cultural and military ones. Gotta say though I’d love to see the country do a 180 towards freedom/capitalism over a 10-20 year (fastback) period. Big-time potential for a ‘little brother’. Would they buy in?
Please. And make sure you get rid of all the ones in Georgia first. Thanks in advance.

It would and the Cuban coastline would be boomtown. But the infrastructure is terrible and it would take a long time to upgrade the roads, electrical grid, and other utilities.
I have a buddy that was assigned to GITMO for a rotation. Said the island is beautiful. Beaches are amazing.
It’s funny Diners, DriveIns, and Dives did a show there and you’d think the country was swimming in tourist money.
But like everything else what the public sees doesn’t tell the story.
Shame. I’m sure with a few hotels, golf courses, and a casino or two, like why they were doing before Castro and Guevara showed up, that place would have more money than it knew what to do with.
Cue the theme music from the Godfather.
I thought private property was verboten in Cuba.
“We’re bigger than US Steel.”
When we go into the next recession (which could come at any time) where will all those immigrants find work? They will on go on various forms of welfare funded by the taxpayer’s dime, as usual. The cost of supporting these millions of people is going to be astronomical.
Yes im surprised. Didn’t communist Cuba ban private home ownership? I’m surprised anyone owns property there.
Not to mention all those cherry ‘57 Chevys.
He does not realize that pretty soon the US is going to be worse than Cuba.

The problem is, if you are waving a dollar and the other guy is waving a gun, you don’t hold on to your dollar for very long.

The thousands (or more) holders of pre Castro stocks might suggest that buying such properties if FOOLISH!
