Thune and his ilk need to be lustrated from the Republican Party, if for no other reason other than to make examples out of them. Primaries, regulated by the state, have become the method to ensure the supremacy of the Uniparty/duopoly. California's "jungle primary" is a prime example of this. I much prefer the European model of multiparty elections, with a runoff if no candidate gets over 50% of the vote. Not enough people vote in the primaries, so that is a poor substitute for a runoff.
