South Dakota’s Noem, Thune face challengers running to right

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has parlayed popularity with Republicans for her hands-off approach to pandemic restrictions into national prominence. But that hasn’t insulated her from criticism — and a primary challenger — from the right in the reliably conservative state.

Noem will look to show her strength with Republican voters in Tuesday’s primary against state Rep. Steve Haugaard, a former state House speaker who has accused Noem of using the governor’s office to mount a 2024 White House bid.

Noem has used this election fundraising cycle to collect a record amount of money for a South Dakota gubernatorial candidate — bringing in more than $15 million from a series of fundraisers all over the country.

The first-term governor will be hoping for a big primary victory before heading into a general election contest against Democratic state Rep. Jamie Smith, who did not face a primary challenger.

The first time John Thune ran for the senate was the first and only time I donated to him, but 20 years later I'm still on his mailing list.

Just another disappointing rino pretending to be a conservative.

When Thune tossed Tom Daschle in ‘04, I thought, what an amazing man! Offered great promise. And then he went to Washington....

Thune is a Bush League Republican that deserves to be primaried.

Re-electing Mitch’s bitches is asking for more of the same Assistant Democrat actions.

I would love to see Thune taken out. The jury is still out for Noam. She’s easy on the eyes but is suspiciously too closely aligned with the Mitch McConnel deep state.

South Dakota can do better.

The primary “challengers” to Noem and Thune are nothing more than nuisance candidates who would be doing *extremely* well if they even achieve 25% to 30% of the primary vote.

There’s nothing to see here at all, aside from some wishful thinking from the liberal media who hope the incumbents will be damaged in the primary and therefore have greater than a snowball’s chance in hell of losing to a Rat bastard in November. Ain’t happening.

Noem is the only person (other than me but I don’t count) I’ve heard quote The Man In The Arena in reference to Donald Trump. She did that at the Mount Rushmore $th event. Her speech was better than Trump’s.

I’m originally from South Dakota and even knew Thune’s uncle and went to high school with his cousins. Thune has largely given up South Dakota values and has become a power hungry swamp creature. However, at this point there really is no one else to vote for. Thune’s primary challengers are political lightweights and giving either of them the nomination could put a Democrat in Thune’s seat. South Dakota voters really don’t have a choice if they are to give the GOP a Senate majority and a prayer of stopping Biden’s highway to socialist hell.

Noem is an enigma to me. She rose politically after I left South Dakota so what I know about her has been filtered through second hand sources. While her roots are in South Dakota ranch country she is politically ambitious and has very effectively positioned herself to national prominence. Clearly she is setting herself up for national office. Does she retain conservative South Dakota values or would she compromise those values for her political ambitions…maybe. One thing is clear the leftist media loathes her and denigrates her at every opportunity. I have to admit that seeing her in jeans, a western shirt and cowboy hat on horseback carrying an American flag is a pretty powerful image of what America used to be and reminds me of Reagan.

SD is a no brainer. Nobody stepped up to take on Thune. Whelan-just look at his 60 minute debate against Herseth-2006. He’s a stiff.

Dusty Johnson did something to rub us all the wrong way. Don’t remember what. Challenger Tatty Howard is at least elected to something. Make a statement. I’d vote for her simply because the house seat is a stepping stone to the senate where the 2 current ones are too disappointing. She wins 2-3 terms and everyone will know who she is.

At least Thune stepped up to take on Daschle. It counts for something.

I just moved to South Dakota.

I registered in time to vote in the primaries.

I think I’m going to vote for all challengers in the primaries.

Assuming Kristi Noem gets re-elected (which she probably will)< i suspect she’s a strong contender to be the next Republican nominee for Vice President. She has a pretty good reputation as governor, she’s attractive and well-spoken, and she might jsut appeal to the soccer moms.

I think she wants to be president, but I think if Trump or DeSantis asked her to be his running mate, she’d jump at it.

Take a look at the political history of Richard Nixon. Representative Nixon was more conservative than Senator Nixon, who was more conservative than Vice President Nixon, who was more conservative than President Nixon. The same is true of most of teh officeholders today.
