More than 250 Republican donors and self-described gun rights supporters penned an open letter this weekend calling for Congress to move on limited gun reform after an elementary school shooting in Uvalde left 19 children and two teachers dead.
“Most law enforcement experts believe these measures would make a difference,” said the letter, according to The Texas Tribune. “And recent polls of fellow conservatives suggest that there is strong support for such gun-safety measures.”
The letter, which ran as a full-page advertisement in The Dallas Morning News on Sunday, also expressed support for the work of Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who was selected by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to lead the GOP in bipartisan gun reform efforts in Congress.
“He’s the right man to lead this bipartisan effort, as he has demonstrated throughout his career,” the letter said.
The bipartisan group of lawmakers led by Cornyn and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) is focusing on a proposal to encourage states to implement red flag laws, which would prohibit individuals considered dangerous to themselves or others from possessing firearms.
It is also considering expanded background checks for gun purchases and other measures to expand mental health care and make schools more secure.
Cornyn said on Friday that it would be “embarrassing” if Congress failed to act in response to the Uvalde shooting.
The letter was paid for by Todd Maclin, a former J.P. Morgan Chase senior executive, the Tribune reported.

They are really Democrats who don’t support the second amendment.
We need real Red Flag Laws.
Like those designed to lock up Commie Congress Critters.
RINOs and Liz Cheney donors
Assistant Democrats exist to assist the Democrats.
They’ve only been importing a new permanent Democrat majority for 30 years.....
I don’t trust Cornyn, & damn sure don’t trust Murphy.

WTH does this even mean? How much could it possibly cost to fund a letter??
In other words, the signers were PAID to sign this crap.
Murphy is a gun grabber,
Do not give him an inch.
(It looks like they are)
I call bullshit. How’s about banning psychotropic drugs for elementary/middle school boys???
Is the Texas GOP trying to convince conservatives to stay home and not bother voting for their sorry asses?
So Soros is funding them...
Red flag laws are VERY dangerous to liberty and rights. Just think, an ex-spouse or an ex-girlfriend/boyfriend with an axe to grind; a neighbor who is pissed over some perceived slight; a disgruntled co-worker; the list is endless for someone who just doesn’t like you for any reason at all who wants to ruin your life.
A national red flag law is a dreadful idea and it is looking like that is what we are going to get.
I think they meant the ad in the newspaper was paid for by that guy. That said, because this is in The Hill, I think we can be confident the story contains material misrepresentations of fact.
I think that the Dems figured out that if they gave $10 each to the Republicans (while donating thousands to their candidates) they could be considered “GOP Donors” at least as far as the media was concerned.
It’s getting easier every day to fill out (or not) my next voters ballot. I simply won’t support sellouts or traitors.
And how exactly would expanded background checks have stopped the killer? Supposedly he bought the guns over the internet and had them shipped to a FFL. He passed a background check (which he shouldn’t have) and got the guns.
Or is this story true? Did he have a driver’s license? Grandpa said no. A passport won’t do, they need an ID with your home address.
