Murphy rules out assault weapons ban, new background checks in Senate plan

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chris Murphy, who is helping lead Senate talks on gun control, said lawmakers don’t plan to bring any bill to the floor that would ban assault weapons or include comprehensive background checks but are actively working on legislation that would include a range of other measures.

“We’re not going to put a piece of legislation on the table that’s going to ban assault weapons, or we’re not going to pass comprehensive background checks,” Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." “But right now, people in this country want us to make progress. They just don’t want the status quo to continue for another 30 years.”

Among the items currently on the table are investments in mental health care and school safety, red flag laws and changes to strengthen the background check system, said Murphy.

Lawmakers have been meeting regularly to try to hammer out a deal, and Murphy expressed optimism that the two parties could strike an accord.

Is that the way these guys really talk?

“or we’re not going to”

Everyone who knew or was exposed to every one of these mass shooters KNEW they were crazy and dangerous.

Most had been reported to the cops on multiple occasions.

“But right now, people in this country want us to make progress.”

That is easy. Close the Southern US Border. Where do you think the money for the weapons at the school shooting came from? Cartels did that.

Where else could an emotionally disturbed, 18 year old boy who thinks he is a girl get $6-8,000 for rifles, ammo and body armor. And the school was locked down 48 times in past year. Because of illegal alien threat. And the Cartels own multiple local houses. Police are aware.

Now, who is to blame? The #ComDem’s Own This.

The corrupt politicos give hundreds of billions to foreign countries all the time...Foreign Aid? Spit* American’s right here at home could use a hand up, or like you said, how about 20 billion to create 20 or 30 mental hospitals/facilities right here at home, for our own people!

Any background check system needs to be de-centralized from the corrupt DOJ/FBI, and given a proctologist-level exam with respect to the Constitution.

I can't imagine much that professional politicans and Swamp Creatures can come up with that won't result in numerous valid legal challenges, and referral to SCOTUS

Republicans may not yet have caught on to how Democrats work. Might be nice if someone explained it to them. It's like this, every point of compromise, every item on which they get you to yield to them becomes the new floor, the launching pad to the next level of negotiations.

It's like the question of, 'How do you eat an elephant?' Answer: 'One bite at a time.' Republicans still think in terms of, 'Let's settle this issue once and for all.' While the Dems are simply applying the principles of dialectics to every problem.

Yep, trying to have it both ways. The Dims want to pass minimal changes now and blame Republicans for not passing more as they gear up for November and seek more restrictions.

Why is it I can’t seem to get any of these politicians to define exactly what an Assault Rifle is?

The problem would be completely solved if Brandon's Gun Free Schools Act were repealed.
FACT: Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year or 6,849 every day. 98+% of the time the gun is not fired and no blood (including the criminal’s) is shed.

I really hate how our Second Amendment rights don’t feel secure when the Dems hold all of the House, Senate and White House. Can only exhale once they lose control of at least one.
