How the FDA bungled the nation’s baby-formula supply
New York Post ^ | June 2, 2022 | Dr. Joel Zinberg

Infant formula provides the sole source of nutrition for infants who are not being breast fed and often supplements breast milk for those who are. Only 47% of infants are exclusively breast fed in the first three months of life, a figure that declines to 26% by six months. Specialty formulas are the only nutrition option for infants who, because of medical problems, cannot utilize standard formulas or breast milk.

It’s also one of the most regulated foods in our country. The Food and Drug Administration’s strict nutritional and labeling requirements make it difficult for foreign producers to export formula to the US, despite evidence that their products are safe and nutritionally adequate. Tariffs — as high as 17.5% — further discourage importation. Consequently, nearly all the formula consumed in the US is produced domestically by four companies. This makes the supply vulnerable to closures of large domestic plants.

The FDA had “concerns about infant formula and special medical food shortages given their production at a small number of facilities controlled by a handful of firms” over two years ago, internal reports show. Yet the agency did little to address formula shortages that began last summer and rapidly increased over the late fall and winter.

In other words, they destroyed the baby formula supply the same way they destroyed the domestic petroleum supply. Just like they’re getting on their knees in front of some nasty characters for extra oil to compensate for their own incompetence, they’re now being other countries to put their own populations at risk and help cover up the dangerous formula situation.

I would’ve hoped that other countries would’ve told Biden where he could stick those transport aircraft. If I was one of those country’s leaders, I’d have told Biden & Co to fix their own problems rather than shortfall my population. I guess other countries’ leaders are now charitable than I. Alternatively, Biden may be putting some markers out there that will take decades to clear.

No, it’s not.

I knew a woman whose son could not tolerate anything but goat milk. When she found that out, she went out and bought a goat for milking.

My kid needed goat milk too. Couldn’t use regular formula or soy.

“she went out and bought a goat for milking”

That might work out just fine for someone living in a rural area like you and me.
It probably is not an option living in an apartment building that does not allow pets or a condo development with certain pet restrictions.
Even in many subdivisions in suburbia there are restrictions on the type of animals allowed on the property.
Basically, nothing but dogs, cats, fish and small rodents.

Not to change the subject, but what I think is funny are all the new first time “country” home owners that have moved into my area in the last few years. The first thing they go out and buy is a chicken coop and chicks down at Tractor Supply.

Typically, after about a year they end up selling the coop.
What they did not realize is having chickens is an open invitation for predators to come onto your property for a easy meal. My daughter went through it. In the course of the year they had coyote, racoon, fisher, bobcat, fox, weasel and finally black bear all try to break into the coop. The bear tore it apart.

It is a lot easier to buy eggs at the grocery store or Julie’s Happy Hens on the other side of town.

IMO, this is a deliberate attempt to deny nutrition to American babies during the critical stage of their mind and body development.

I think the formula is basically diluted cow milk with added sugar and vitamins. Of course the proportions are scientifically researched.
(Disclaimer - Alleged, do not take me for my word!)
Like all FDA, they like to control everything so they discourage any home made replacements.

True, but it is an option for at least some people and anything that helps is a win.

If the concern is about the limited number of firms, then encourage others, yah TWOT’s.
Regulatory agencies systematically push more regs, most times just to justify their existence. They never consider the down side, that that extra reg will decrease competition.
I wonder if they also employ the same corrupt practice as used out here in CaCaLand — ask existing suppliers if an additional one is OK. Say WHAT? Yes, they actually poll the market to see if extra competition is wanted. They, the regulators, are that stupid — or bribed.
