Police: Tulsa suspect targeted surgeon he blamed for pain

A man who blamed his surgeon for ongoing pain after a recent back surgery bought an AR-style rifle hours before opening fire at a Tulsa medical office, killing the surgeon and three other people before fatally shooting himself, police said Thursday.

Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin says the gunman had recently undergone back surgery and had called a clinic repeatedly complaining of pain.

Franklin says the doctor who performed the surgery, Dr. Preston Phillips, was killed Wednesday, along with another doctor, a receptionist and a patient.

“We also have a letter on the suspect, which made it clear that he came in with the intent to kill Dr. Phillips and anyone who got in his way,” Franklin said. “He blamed Dr. Phillips for the ongoing pain following the surgery.”

Authorities said the gunman carried a rifle and handgun during the shooting at the medical building on a hospital campus, the latest in a series of deadly mass shootings across the country in recent weeks.

Police chief said in the press conference that be bought the rifle an hour before the shootings. I watched it online. He said it was bought legally.

When taken AS PRESCRIBED, opioids have a very low, less than 2% addiction rate. Problem is people like how they feel, so,they take more and more, often mixing them with illegal drugs or alcohol, so addiction and deaths go up. Most deaths from legal opioids were from mixing either illegal drugs or alcohol or both at the same time.

I have been on Vicodin several times before and after surgery. I get very irritable after being on it for a week or two. I can't even stand to be around myself at that point. I try to wean myself off of opioids as quickly as possible. Once I can control pain with NSAIDs, I stop using opiods.

Yeah, I heard “The Gunman” this morning also.

So anyone of us who may own a gun is now a Gunman?

And the Gunman is now dead, and not able to protest the CIS of calling him a GunMAN.

What an a-hole. Back surgery is seldom 100% successful. I had back surgery about 10 years ago. It was very successful, but I still have pain issues (though not as bad as before the surgery). I do know people whose pain was worse after the surgery. It happens. This a-hole wasn’t even worth operating on.

The police chief said their procedures dictate massive force to stop the threat immediately. He also emphasized they have no concern for their personal safety.

The exact opposite of what we saw in Uvalde, Texas.

“100% correct, and one reason, imo, for the fentanyl problem.”

Not exactly. Fentanyl is not a popular prescription drug - it is a VERY popular illicit drug. The ingredients go from China to the Mexican drug cartels where it is made into powder and pills and then smuggled into the USA. IMHO this constitutes chemical warfare against the citizens of the USA but don’t expect this government to do anything about it except maybe safe injection sites and other such foolishness.

I have that problem with vicodin too, and one other pain drug, but am fine with oxycodone morphine codeine and opium- no issues with them. For some reason the vikodin causes anger issues.

Well turned phrase ... ‘conga line’! The string wants this to be an MK Ultra government false flag, when it is a common everyday irrational anger for a surgery perhaps done badly. No one wants to see the elephant in the room, the soft racism of canceling excellence in favor of mediocrity to be ‘inclusive’.

Maybe that was after the waiting period.

And the “pain management” and chronic back problems are often linked. Not just because the back problems cause pain, but because people who have back injuries and then are subscribed opiates often go on to injure their backs further, instead of resting and recuperating until the pain goes away. Then they just get hooked on opiates because without them, the pain is going to be constant.

You're not supposed to just rest and recuperate after back surgery. I had a laminectomy and discectomy and was required to walk a couple of hours after surgery. My neurosurgeon told me to walk at least 2 miles a day starting with the day after surgery. About 3 months after surgery I was given an appointment with physical therapists at a gym to learn some exercises to strengthen and protect my back.

My orthopedic surgeon say he will not do back surgery until I come crawling into his office. After failing steroids and opiates.
Either way, killer was a nut, or marginally sane person driven crazy by perception or reality of unrelieved pain.

In most states the only waiting period is if you get delayed by the FBI background check. If they fail to get back to the firearms dealer within three days, the transaction goes through.

Calling all surgeons quacks is broadly over general.

I thought that was a bit over-the-top myself. I've had two surgeries in my lifetime, and both were quite successful and did what they were calculated to do. However, to be honest, ripping on physicians is a time-honored tradition amongst the lay set, and if a professional is going to listen in on their casual talk, he'd best take what they say in the same humor, and with a big grain of salt.

Your numbers are no longer correct. Proper back surgery for proper pathology is quite successful. Calling all surgeons quacks is broadly over general. But the conga line of the medical illiterati will soon arrive. You appear to be leading said parade.

Sadly, while I agree with you on this subject gas_dr, everything you post on FreeRepublic is now suspect because of your Blinders-On, Pro-Vaccine, Pro-Big-Pharma postings all in the face of evidence that has proven you wrong.

One of these days, people will start taking written threats of gun violence seriously.

Then again, maybe not.

“You’re not supposed to just rest and recuperate after back surgery.”

I wasn’t talking about after surgery, just after an injury.
