What’s going on with electric power in the United States?
American Thinker ^ | 6/2/2022 | Mac Madden

Posted on 06/02/2022 6:29:09 AM PDT by Tell It Right

While natural gas has risen to supplant coal as the United State’s largest energy source for electricity, total energy has not increased in 10 years. Due to economic conditions and government regulations, coal plants have been shuttered at a rapid rate since 2010. In the period 1993 to 2009, retirements averaged .36 GW per year and totaled 6.2 GW. In 2020 and 2021 retirements averaged 7.9 GW per year and 95.2 GW in total. Over the next five years, planned retirements will total over 24 GW. All this has been supplanted in part by natural gas. Some facilities converted to gas, but in the period 2011 to 2019, only 29.6 GW was converted to gas while 49.2 GW of coal generation was retired.

Mac details a lot of numbers for the power generation that was gotten rid of in the war on coal, and how little was replaced with gas fueled plants. All while the population is growing and the Dims are pushing us to drive electric cars.

The Dims truly are evil in their desire to put us in the dark ages.

Gas, Oil or Coal……..chances are your Tesla runs on one of these carbon based fuels.

WE sacrificed reliable baseload power on the altar of unreliable “sustainable” energy. The result is blackouts. This is further proof that many so called “progressive” policies are, in fact, regressive.

“only 29.6 GW was converted to gas”

John Kerry put NG on notice. The oil industry is paying attention, record profits shows they do now want to invest in this environment, why would they when a fully approved and permitted project can be cancelled with the stroke of a pen?

This isn’t rocket science.

“total energy has not increased in 10 years. “

Misleading statement as we only generate what is demanded.

Capacity has increased each year so if demand is flat our reserve capacity increases.

Regional and peak load variances not considered.

And that "Progressives" are insane and stupid because they won't learn and instead they will just fall back on their old excuse of "We just didn't invest enough money in renewables, if we only spend more"

Combined cycle NG to electricity to EV is the most energy efficient means of private transportation.

The Houston area has been suffering from brownouts caused by a fire at the large T.H. Wharton lignite generating station at Sugarland.

Coincidence? I think not.

You don’t need a Ph.D. in economics to realize that the assault on the fossil fuel industry is causing marked increases in cost of electricity, gasoline and diesel. This energy squeeze is contracting the economy causing shortages of goods, food, poverty and inflation. It will also cause an increase of gun violence and criminal activity.

I hate to post something saying it's not so bad, but I read this report today from this group called UK Fires about what needs to be done for the UK to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 (which was a government mandate from the Theresa May Tory government that is still in effect. Here is a summary chart:

link to the report.

Fortunately nobody is seriously considering anything that insane in the US, yet. But I think it's just a matter of time.

This is what bureaucrats do best - making pretty charts with no basis in reality.

They always assume the cost to go further green will be lower than the reality, just like they assume the benefits will be more than the reality. The reality is you'll get less for more.

But that's when it's done by the government (in this case UK, but the same applies to the US). If you do it yourself and are in a good situation, solar can be beneficial. Especially if you lower the goal posts to a reasonable goal like saving money on your power bill and providing power some of the times the grid power goes down. Move away from the unrealistic goal of getting completely off fossil fuels. The reason my home solar system works well is because I don't think like a bureaucrat specializing in regulations and red tape. I think like a free American citizen who gets paid to solve problems (software engineer).

And without continuous investments in oil, we cannot maintain our military's capabilities.

Our government is run by our enemies.

Absolutely. This fall I'm putting about 6000W of solar on my house for approximately $3500, including installation.

Then I'll be able to use that to charge an electric "golf cart" vehicle I'll use to get around in my little beach town... Only using my Camry for longer trips.

Carbon or Global Warning or Greta have absolutely nothing to do with it. It just makes sense in my circumstances.

True, but if you read the report, there is substance.

For example, close all airports except Belfast and Heathrow. Only allow access to those airports by electric trains. For example, eliminate all beef and mutton. For example, stop the use of concrete. Stop cooking food. etc.

In other words, they want to cause massive death and destruction of their own country in order to appease an autistic Swedish girl.
