Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced legislation on Monday to essentially scrap the handgun market in the country.
“We’re introducing legislation to implement a national freeze on handgun ownership. What this means is it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer, or import handguns anywhere in Canada.”
“In other words, we’re capping the market for handguns.”
“Other than using firearms for sport shooting and hunting, there is no reason anyone in Canada should need guns in their everyday lives,” Trudeau added, according to Reuters.
In the same speech, he announced that law enforcement would begin cracking down on gun smuggling efforts. According to the CBC, long gun magazines will also no longer be allowed to carry more than five rounds, which means sellers legally cannot sell rounds larger than that. The outlet points out that this is not a full ban on handguns, but it’s pretty close to one.
“This is Trudeau’s authoritarian push to limit the people’s power ..Just look at what happened in Ukraine, what might happen in Taiwan w/ China – I can go on but you get the picture… What happened in #Uvalde should have never happened but don’t use it as an excuse to seize power,” Fox News contributor Sara Carter said about the legislation.
CBC noted that Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino brought the bill forth to the House of Commons, and he announced that the Canadian government would also begin enforcing their mandatory buyback program for “assault-style” weapons that were made illegal two years ago.
