Her Majesty The Queen: 70 remarkable photos of her reign

“I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service.” So said Princess Elizabeth in a speech to the Commonwealth, broadcast on the radio from Cape Town as she marked her 21st birthday in 1947. A mere five years later, she ascended the throne following the death of her father, King George VI, and the young Queen promptly set about making good on her promise. In November 1953, she embarked on a Commonwealth tour that covered 44,000 miles, spanned the West Indies, Australasia, Asia and Africa, and lasted until May the following year

By the time she stepped back from international travel in 2016, leaving her children and grandchildren to take up the mantle of representing the monarchy overseas, Her Majesty had visited every one of the 54 Commonwealth nations besides Cameroon and Rwanda, many on multiple occasions. Beyond that, the Queen has dined with Presidents Eisenhower, Ford and Bush at the White House, swapped her signature paintbox brights for traditional black to meet with Pope John Paul II in Vatican City, and became the first British sovereign to visit China in 1986.

With her globetrotting days now behind her, and as more Commonwealth nations seek to establish their independence (Barbados became the world’s newest republic in November 2021, and Jamaica has signalled its desire to follow suit), the traditional royal tour will likely look rather different as the monarchy moves into the future. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge represent its modern face, but when they arrived in Kingston during their official visit to the Caribbean earlier this year, they were met with protests, not flowers.

And one of her most remarkable achievements is reigning so long and keeping her dopey, whiny, self-centered twit of a son off the throne. God save the Queen!

And to help celebrate her 70 years on the throne, the BBC is airing a special about her early years before she became queen. Elizabeth II will be played by a dancer from Singapore, Janice Ho. Apparently there were no English actresses considered appropriate for the role.

Depends on how they govern. The Bible would indicate that God anoints kings, so the very concept of royalty can’t be wrong per se.

Saudi Arabia, 1979 The Queen was given the status of “honorary man” so that she could be greeted by the ruler in Riyadh.

Sounds kind of queer?

Not sure what that is supposed to mean but if you are suggesting she is dead, are you suggesting it is a body double of hers that is appearing at events?

I think she needs another 2 years before she overtakes Louis XIV as the longest (verifiable) reigning monarch of a sovereign country.

Trying to find a way to watch BBC One here is the US. So far no success.

The VPNs I have tried are useless.

Great excitement in the UK!

Long Live The Queen!
