Prince Andrew is "seeking to make amends" after his sex abuse scandal, the Archbishop of Canterbury has said.
The Archbishop added that society must learn to be "more open and forgiving" moving forward.
"We all have to step back a bit, he is seeking to make amends and I think that's a very good thing," he told ITV News.
He went on to say: "You can't tell people how they are to respond about this and the issues of the past in the area of abuse are so intensely personal and private for so many people that it's not surprising there's very deep feelings indeed."
It came as the Most Revd Justin Welby was being asked about whether the upcoming Platinum Jubilee celebrations would help the public unite and forgive the royal following the scandal.
He added: "We have become a very unforgiving society."
Andrew settled his sexual abuse lawsuit earlier in the year, which was brought against him by Virginia Giuffre.
Ms Giuffre was suing Andrew for sexual abuse, saying the duke had sex with her when she was 17 and had been trafficked by his friend, Jeffrey Epstein.
Andrew always strenuously denied the allegations and went on to avert a looming trial by agreeing to the settlement last month.
He has since faced several calls to confirm how he funded the substantial out-of-court settlement - reported to be as much as £12 million - and whether the Queen or even the Prince of Wales contributed to the sum.

It’s hilarious that Prince Andrew is the fall guy for this thing. He is probably the least powerful person who was in Epstein’s circle.
He’s toast, let his daughters make amends.
"All the sex allegations in the world never fed a hungry child."
Well Andy fed something to a child. Don't imagine they were hungry for it tho'.
17, how old was Prince Andrew? Her grandfather’s age? What about other victims? Age difference there and status which means guilty.
Randy Andy is a disgrace. Ought to lose his title.
What I have never been able to understand is where were all these young girls families? I think I’d be pretty concerned if my 16 year old daughter came up to me and said she was gonna hang around an old dude on his island or wherever. Did these girls just spring from the ground when he and his gf plucked them up?
He is going to unrape some young girls.
> Andrew always strenuously denied the allegations... <
A big part of making amends is admitting that what you did was wrong. You’d don’t necessarily have to do it publicly, before a dozen cameras. But nevertheless, you have to do it.
Don’t you have to confess your sins and face up to the temporal consequences? (Oh, right... Henry VIII.)
He’s sorry he got caught.
No surprises here. The raison d’être of the Church of England is excusing the monarchy’s sexual escapades.
Successful predators are successful for a reason.
Epstein’s handlers didn’t target one of the most powerful families on the planet for giggles.
And isn’t it interesting that Welby is shilling for Andrew.
I wonder if the House of Windsor is the only UK institution with an Epstein Problem...
Meanwhile, Welby won’t be doing the Jubillee service.
He’s got the coof.
Interesting timing.
Aside from the tawdry sex aspect of Randy Andy’s life, he and his ex-wife are also known for shady deals with shady people, and he and his mummy (and the Arch Bish) are doing their level best to help him get his snout back into the money trough. The Brits should finally see the end of Airmiles Andy in public life once Charles takes over.
The one good thing the IRA did was taking care of that monster Mountbatten.
Until we see someone actually suffer some consequences, there is no Epstein Problem, though there should be.
Blah blah blah…different rules for different people…
