The US government appears close to sending a long-range multiple-rocket system (MLRS) to Ukraine.
Russia sees such deliveries of heavy weapons as a provocative escalation.
President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials have urged delivery of the MLRS to counter Russia's heavy bombardments in the eastern Donbas region.
But President Joe Biden said the US would not send Ukraine rocket systems "that can strike into Russia".
There are concerns that such action would risk drawing the US and its Nato allies into direct conflict with Moscow.
Moscow has welcomed President Biden's decision not to send weapons to Ukraine that could reach deep inside Russia.
Russia continues to pound Severodonetsk and other parts of Donbas with rockets, tanks and air strikes.
Kyiv's forces are already using US-delivered M777 howitzers, which have a range of about 25km (16 miles). But the MLRS would allow Ukraine to reach targets much further away than that.
An M270 MLRS battery can fire a range of munitions, with the most advanced able to hit targets up to 300km (186 miles) away. However, it can also fire shorter-range rockets with a range of around 70km (43 miles).
Limiting Ukraine to the smaller rockets could be a way for the US to avoid escalating the conflict, while still significantly improving Ukraine's arsenal.
A senior US official quoted by the Washington Post said the White House was comfortable with giving Ukraine the MLRS, but would withhold the longest range weapons compatible with the system.

It’s like telling a boxer, you can defend yourself all you want, but you’re not allowed to hit back.
Russia sees it as a weapon that outclasses its weapons which they can't match especially with sanctions imposed on its economy.
WOW, just read Brandon said NO to MLRS. Okay Democrats which story is true? Can’t have it both ways. Walking back again ?
“But President Joe Biden said the US would not send Ukraine rocket systems “that can strike into Russia”.”
I doubt the Neocons running this war care what Biden has to say about what weapons can be sent there.
Just no. Dump it on Europe to solve and pay for. We have our own border issues to fund and solve.
Do you really believe it? 98 M777s is nothing given that Ukraine already has hundreds of more capable guns. MLRS in the basic layout is also inferior to the systems already in theater on both sides. If you are going to bring systems capable to hit targets inside Russia, Russia is going to bring similar systems to your enemies.
India bought some - $5 million EACH.
When Russia destroys our Eastern seaboard don’t say nothing.
Just be happy that millions of Americans are dead because we chose to back a corrupt Globalist state headed by a dancing homosexual puppet.
This is crazy stuff from crazy Dem party. Why insist on getting more and more Ukies killed. Biden will fight this war to the last Ukrainian. Pure evil.
Sometimes I think this country would be better off if we could just saw off the eastern seaboard and let it float out to sea.Barry Goldwater, 1963

Why not defensive Tactical nukes?
Lockheed and Raytheon are ecstatic!
Yep, Newsmax says No, BBC says Yes, which is accurate?
Western Media is so Trustworthy!
Just kidding.
I read both articles and I think they are saying the same thing in different ways and that leads to confusion. As I read it, the MLRS will be supplied with only the shorter-range, i.e. 43-mile range, rockets. The longer-range rockets will not be supplied to Ukraine.
BTW - IMO, none of this US equipment should be supplied.
Ukraine doesn't need tactical nukes. Russia just announced that they won't use tactical nukes in Ukraine. They have been made aware by "diplomatic means" that using any kind of nuclear, biological, or chemical weapon in Ukraine will not be tolerated by NATO. NATO could inflict very serious punishment on Russian forces with conventional means. I don't think they want to see the rest of the Black Sea fleet joining the Moskva at the bottom of the Black Sea after their crews have more accidents that cause uncontrollable fires onboard.
Maybe during the Cold War. But now?

Biden: US Will Not Send Ukraine Rocket Systems That Can Reach Russia
https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/4067351/posts
Nothing has changed. The US will send the M142 and/or M270 MLRS systems, but will not provide the long range rockets. They will "only" get the M30/M31 rockets with a range of about 50 miles. The M142 and M270 have the ability to carry ballistic missiles that can reach much, much further, but there's no way we will be sending those to Ukraine. Yet.
Not very useful besides adding a few tubes across a front hundreds of mile long against an enemy with thousands of tubes. The ammo is extremely expensive expensive. And they are not getting the latest version either.
The UA needs SPGs and they will be getting a few from Poland (ANS Krab), Germany (PzH-2000), and the US (M109 Paladin - version unknown) which will greatly help counter Orc artillery. More 777s would also be a great help.
