You just published a book, How to Prevent the Next Pandemic. What will the next pandemic be like if we fail to prevent it?
Well, it could be born from a virus that we already know. It could be a variety of flu, another type of coronavirus… And that would at least allow us to have some knowledge about how to get treatments and vaccines very quickly. But it could also be something else. It could be a virus made by man, by a bioterrorist who designed it and intentionally circulated it. That's a very scary scenario because they could try to spread it in different places at once.
Or it could be something that makes the leap from the natural world. The human population is growing and we are invading more and more ecosystems. That is why I calculate that there is a 50% chance that we will have a pandemic of natural origin in the next 20 years, as a consequence of climate change.

It’s a safe bet ... historically the world has recorded pandemic each 40 years or so, sometimes shorter interval between pandemics. Pandemic is a common, almost certain event for a normal natural lifetime.

Thanks, Nostradumass. Before COVID, the last real pandemic was the 1968 Hong Kong flu (back in the good old days when we were allowed to be diseases after Chinese cities). Before that there was a flu epidemic in 1957-58 and the Spanish Flu at the end of WW I. So 3 in a century = average interval of 33 years. 50% chance of it happening on a shorter interval isn’t exactly a huge prediction.

You can pretty much fill in the blank with whatever you want when talking about future events as a 50/50. Either they happen or they dont. No science or magic voodoo required.
There is a 100% chance Gates will be dead in 20 years.
We can only hope its closer to 10 years.

Everyone dies eventually, and there is economy of quantity. Seems like a win.
