Beto O'Rourke urged protesters to break the opposition of Republicans to gun control by 'getting in their faces before another child is shot in face' outside the National Rifle Association meeting in Houston on Friday.
Thousands of protesters assembled across the street from a convention center where former President Donald Trump was due to speak in favor of the Second Amendment.
But O'Rourke, who is running to unseat Republican Greg Abbott as Texas governor, delivered an impassioned plea for action days after 19 children and two teachers were shot dead about 270 miles away in Uvalde.
'So I ask you for those of you in power and who hold office right now and were in the way and refuse to act: Please promise me you will get in their faces before another child is shot in their face,' he told protesters.
The NRA event comes as the nation once again asks why a troubled 18-year-old could so easily buy two military-style weapons.
A string of high-profile singers has canceled appearances at the NRA's concert on Saturday, and even Abbott - a staunch defender of access to guns - is now sending a recorded message instead of attending.
O'Rourke has been a vocal campaign for gun control. This week he interrupted a news conference by Republican officials to demand immediate action after the worst school shooting in a decade.

There is no way that the Uvalde shooting was part of a ‘cunning plan’.
If, for no other reason who would pick Salvador Ramos to execute such a thing? A clearly disturbed kid with obvious mental problems.
Yes, the door was propped open, but had the classrooms’ doors been locked, he wouldn’t have had such easy prey. And the cops followed him into the school through the propped-open door.
What kind of person, working in a school would agree to the slaughter of fourth-graders by deliberately leaving the door open to let a murderer in? No, this is a terrible combination of bad luck, perhaps, (in hindsight) poor judgement and most importantly, a terrible failure on the part of law enforcement.
Beto is irrelevant
The first bill of the last legislative session in Texas, SB-1 “Election Integrity Protection Act of 2021,” was crafted and passed and Abbott signed it into law. Texas has also done a big election audit of 2020. The results of that should come out soon.
Once Beto and his herd of leftist freaks get their teeth knocked out a few times, they will end up a lot less aggressive.
Arm the teachers and hire LEO’s who will actually protect and serve.
Guns cannot ever be controlled to the point where it will stop mass shootings.
And even if they were, some sociopath who is hell bent on killing someone will find another way to do it.
