Some amateur sleuthing and a chance encounter helped uncover how the former president of The Gambia had laundered his money by buying a luxurious property in the US.
Now a court has ruled that the $3m (£2.4m) mansion in the state of Maryland, near Washington DC, should be seized from a trust set up by ex-Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh.
Funds raised by the sale of the house should benefit those who were harmed by the former president's "acts of corruption and abuse of office", the US authorities say.
An investigation by the department of justice (DOJ) found that the money used to buy the six-bedroom house was raised through corruption.
"Maryland real estate is not a shelter for funds for corrupt rulers who have stolen from their countrymen," said Selwyn Smith, one of the agents overseeing the case.
But it was investigations by campaigners a decade ago that first highlighted the issue.

Great! Now do the Clintons and Obamas.
Gambia Big Man buy house in US Merry Land?
Potomac in in Montgomery County, not P.G. County, where I would think Gambia Big Man and his family would feel more at home. Not as many White Devils in P.G.C.
And why (I wonder) would Gambia Big Man want to escape to our racist hell-hole of a country? Makes you wonder.
I think you are making big assumptions about where he might want to live.
Yeah, maybe he just bought the place as an investment.
Gambia is dirt poor with no resources. Ain’t much still outside of foreign aid. Big time crooks like the Clintons and Bushes would never bother with such small potatoes. It’s like comparing a street corner drug dealer with El Chapo.
The Gambia is a small patch of river - the smallest country in mainland Africa.
There were discussions about their uniting with Senegal but nothing came of it. Although they are both overwhelmingly Muslim and (I think) of the Wolof tribe, the difference between English and French colonial rule proved too much.
Short Bus Biden's and CrackBoy Hunter's stuff.
- was - ???
I disagree (on seizing the assets of the trust).
If the Trust was properly set up and all the i’s and t’s were dotted the trust should not be violated.
If it is, who’s next?
The “key” is whether or not all the i’s and t’s were dotted and the trust was “legal”. If it was, leave it alone. It’s not worth destroying Trust in Trust’s for one lousy little mansion.
Your assets can be seized if you "misgender" someone.
Does the agent have to give back the cut?
DOJ seizes Gambian property, sells property and rakes 10% for the Big Guy, sends balance to Gambia where bosses rake 98% for their guys. Remainder is seized by Gambian government for taxes. All good.
