The teacher “propped open” the door the gunman then used to enter the school? That teacher should be investigated intensely imo.
My guess, but it’s backed by many years of teaching, was that if the door was propped open for longer than it took to get a phone, it was so the teacher could load his or her car with stuff from the classroom. Vacation was just a day or two away.
In the day-to-day life of a school, doors are often propped open. Remember, this was an ordinary end-of-the-school-year day. No one was thinking, “I’ll bet there’s a shooter out there just waiting for a chink in the school’s armor”. Only through hindsight do we now know the danger everyone was in.
I remember when the Florida shooting occurred, telling students how much they were going to see school change. Gates were installed to keep people from driving into the middle of the school, virtually all doors leading outside were always locked, visitors had to be buzzed into the school, had to sign in and wear tags. And we acquired a full-time armed sheriff’s deputy/’resource officer’. None of this was S.O.P. before then.
For years parents were free to walk into the school and go to their kids’ classrooms. Talk to the teacher, etc. etc. and nothing bad came of it. We didn’t run our school on the assumption that at any time a crazy might try to shoot the place up, because it never happened...until one day it did.
But in the tens of thousands of schools across the country, nothing did happen. But now all of us are going to have to act like it could.
This is how groping be the TSA started just in case youre a skyjacker ...
But the skyjackers just walked in ...
In day to day life, safety measures are often disabled for convenience.
It doesn't usually cause people to die.
Sometimes it does.
People are stupid.
