Goodbye NYC: Estimates show big city losses, Sunbelt gains

Ko Im always thought she would live in New York forever. She knew every corner of Manhattan and had worked hard to build a community of friends. Living in a small apartment, she found her attitude shifting early in the pandemic. After her brother accepted a job in Seattle in the summer of 2020, she decided to move there too.

“It was fine until it wasn’t,” said Im, 36. “The pandemic really changed my mindset about how I wanted to live or how I needed to live.”

Eight of the 10 largest cities in the U.S. lost population during the first year of the pandemic, with New York, Los Angeles and Chicago leading the way. Between July 2020 and July 2021, New York lost more than 305,000 people, while Chicago and Los Angeles contracted by 45,000 residents and 40,000 people, respectively.

Although San Francisco’s not among the 10 largest cities, almost 55,000 residents left that city, or 6.3% of its 2020 population, the highest percentage of any U.S. city.

Among the 10 largest U.S. cities, only San Antonio and Phoenix gained new residents, but they added only about 13,000 people each, or less than 1% of their populations, according to 2021 vintage population estimates.

Justin Jordan’s move to Phoenix a year ago was motivated by a job offer paying him more money than the one in Moundsville, West Virginia, where he had been living. He has had to adjust to 110 degree Fahrenheit (43.3 degree Celsius) temperatures and unwieldly traffic.

I hate it. Most of the vermin escaping NY will bring their blue voting habits as they infest other areas.

I doubt I will visit NYC again. Some dude might shoot me on the subway for any reason or no reason. Why should I take the risk?

Many NYC’ers fled the city for CT. They invaded my idyllic town (100 miles from NYC), raised the property values, and flipped one of the few red CT towns to blue in the last election in Nov 2021. Our mill rate has promptly been increased this year. Mind you, this was an Election Day that nationwide went predominantly GOP. No big deal, there’s no hope for CT anyway.

I’d prefer the Libtards confined to a few urban areas and not infect Red states with their disease.

What rational parent would voluntarily send their child to a NYC public school or play in the city? Urban America is unlivable.

Most liberals have a very naive (and dangerous) “this time it will be different” belief: Yes, Democrats ruined my home town. But I will continue to vote Democrat. Because this time it will be different.

“But I will continue to vote Democrat. Because this time it will be different.”

Yes, they mean no harm, in fact, they are arrogant in their belief that they are smarter and better people than us.

You know, rats didn’t mean any harm in 1665 in London, they were just trying to get something to eat. In that way, liberals are just as deadly, maybe even deadlier, than the rats in London, 1665.

“New York lost more than 305,000 people”

This is just NYC. There have to be at least another 2-300,000 that have left Westchester County, northern NJ, western CT and
Long Island.

These people are moving up and down the east coast of the US from northern New England down to Florida. The people that have moved here to NH are not city residents. They were people moving from the suburbs of NYC.

Most older Democrats truly mean no harm. They are Democrats mainly because their dad and granddad were Democrats. These people foolishly believe that the Democrat Party is still the party of everyday working folks.

It’s the younger “progressive” Democrats who are the danger. They want an entirely new order for this country: critical race theory, defund the police, government censorship of dissenters, etc. It’s a real shame that traditional Democrats can’t see this.

“Most older Democrats truly mean no harm. “

It’s the result, not the intent that matters.

It’s the younger “progressive” Democrats who are the danger.

Younger Republicans are also to the left of their Republican parents. They're more likely to support gay marriage, and are generally more liberal on social, religious, and cultural issues.

There needs to be a law which states that people moving between the states MUST be removed from the source voter roll before being allowed to vote in their new state of residence. And that should come with an affidavit from the states voting office stating the individual is no longer registered to vote in that state.
