Energy bills are set to go up by more than £800 this autumn - as the regulator warned that the price cap is likely to hit £2,800 in October.

Ofgem's boss described soaring gas prices as a "once in a generation event" - made even more acute by Russia's war in Ukraine. Campaigners say - millions more people will be thrust into what is known as “fuel stress” - forced to choose between paying for food or heating their homes.

But the government will tell them don’t you worry, we’ve got you covered, and costs won’t soar for families.

But gov’t fails time and again.

Green energy solutions are a waste of money.

I really don’t care.
I live in Hawaii
no heat or A/C required.
Costs a fortune to live here,
but better than where you are.

Declaring economic war on Russia was a colossal mistake. The West overreacted by trying to destroy the Russian economy and currency. It has backfired. Europeans and Americans are bearing the pain of the sanctions, especially those at the bottom of the economic ladder. Soaring energy and food costs are regressive taxes. The UK is responding by expanding the welfare state and virtually nationalizing the energy sector. Look for Biden to try to do the same.

"Green energy solutions are a waste of money."

I agree wholeheartedly if talking at the utility level and managed by bureaucrats. Government messes up everything it touches.

But I can testify that solar is good as a DIY project if you live in the right circumstances (i.e. live in the southern half of the U.S., no shade on your roof, metal roof that will outlast the 25-year warranty of the panels, large portion of your roof facing south, plan to live there long enough to recoup the costs, etc.). If you're a small-government minded American and live in a situation like that, you ought to consider weaning at least the energy portion of your budget away from the whims of the Dims.

Exactly, it’s not the war that caused inflation, its the sanctions we imposed that caused the inflation.

The UK press keeps a running tally on how many pensioners freeze to death in their homes.

Example:

Thousands of people in the UK are dying from the cold, and fuel poverty is to blame

I remember living in the world you're talking about... the one that made sense - and long term planning could be done. Anyhow, thanks for options to consider...

Hawaii is self-sufficient?

Produces everything it needs?

Life is fine as long as you fish?

Why then does it cost a fortune to live there?

Why?

I read that UK gets its oil from the North Sea & Norway.

Last I looked, Hawaii is Dem controlled.

So: only keep out the poor ones, then? All natives/locals are rich? How rich if you subtract tourism?

I’ve been to Hawaii. Saw no self-sufficiency. Have friends and much experience in Caribbean islands and experience in Pacific islands. Everything comes in by boat or plane except fish, pig, chickens, goat, taro, coconuts and a small amount of other indigenous produce. I’ve experienced one island that had access to energy due to an oil depository. But the butane came by boat. They spent the lockdown doing without as the supply boats anchored beyond the reef and they were forbidden by their own Coast Guard from going out to offload supplies.

I grant most islands survived back in the 1950s and before, but they still had infrequent supplies by sea and most of the adult men worked on the mainlands or in merchant marine and sent money home. Everyone fished. Still, there wasn’t much to buy. One friend said he was in his twenties before he saw chicken other than frozen, thawed and refrozen. That would have been around 1970.

Some islands were more fortunate than others. Even Maui in 1975 was mainly poor, with 1-2 resorts catering to French nationals. “Shops” were mostly someone’s front room with expired foreign canned goods. I was there. A Western (French) lifestyle in Papeete was around $US10k/month.

Yeah, the climate is nice on the coast. You can grow produce all year round, if you guard against the varmints. Fishing is free. So, you can provide for yourself at a subsistence level with little effort. And the ocean is magnificent.

I was simply responding to an over-abundance of smug in your post.

Not a good look.

Wasn’t trying to be smug.
I have two hens behind me as I type.
I was trying to make a comment on how people that insist
on living in Cities should not complain when they
can’t care for themselves.
You want public transportation, “Green” Power, communal housing, Arts, free education, et al to be subsidized and cheap.
Y’all don’t have a clue, where your food, power, water,
and personal safety come from.
I live in Hawaii and I do.
It is my responsibility to provide those things.
not some Democrat government entity.
Aloha.

We are in complete agreement and my D-voting urban relatives are already reaping the whirlwind. They have been so poisonous for so long, they are persona non grata for when the main SHTF occurs.

Too old for chickens with no available coop-cleaners, but my garden is 99% planted, so there’s that.

Sorry if I was harsh. I admit this torture we are all experiencing, to some degree, at least, is wearing on me.

‘Golden Years’, eh?

Glad to hear your garden is doing well.
You are a little older than I.
I was crawling around H-bombs in 1974.
in rural North Dakota.

Aloha.
