Indiana lawmakers override GOP governor's veto to enact anti-trans sports ban

Indiana banned transgender women and girls from competing on public school sports teams consistent with their gender after the state's Republican-led legislature voted Tuesday to override a veto issued earlier this year by their GOP governor in order to enact the controversial law.

Indiana's House of Representatives voted to override Gov. Eric Holcomb's veto of HEA 1041 by a vote of 67-28. The state's Senate later voted to override the veto by a vote of 32-15. The votes underscore the strong desire by Republicans to push anti-transgender laws, especially ones targeting trans youth. When he vetoed the measure in March, Holcomb, in comments that marked a notable departure from how other GOP governors have discussed the issue, stressed in a letter to lawmakers that "after thorough review," he found "no evidence" that the problem his state's bill sought to fix existed. The governor said HEA 1041 was too broadly written, specifically cited concerns about how the legislation would be applied consistently across the state and, like Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who vetoed a similar ban around the same time, noted the lawsuits challenging similar laws across the country. Utah lawmakers later overrode their governor's veto.

Indiana's legislation states that "a male, based on a student's biological sex at birth in accordance with the student's genetics and reproductive biology, may not participate on an athletic team or sport designated under this section as being a female, women's, or girls' athletic team or sport." The bill applies to public schools in the state, as well as private schools whose teams compete against public school teams.

They should have added public colleges.

Good for them.

Why does Indiana elect weak-kneed Governors?

I’m confused. Does this mean XYs are not allowed to compete in XX sports? Or they are allowed?

That headline is a real piece of work. Shouldn’t have to reverse engineer a bunch of word salad in order to figure out what’s what.

“Indiana legislature enacts law to protect girls sports”

Simple, to the point.

The votes underscore the strong desire by Republicans to push anti-transgender laws

That's a lot of twisting of he law, and the twisting is not addressing the real purpose for the law.

The law is about fairness, and fairness says that a man who still has the body of a man after 'attempted' conversion to a female, should not be competing against a female who would be physically disadvantaged against a person who still has the body of a man. Spin and twisting won't change the fact that the law is not about bias against transgenders, who still have the right to feel like a woman and even attempt to convert to a woman.

especially ones targeting trans youth.

That, again, is a lot of spin, by attempting to make the law sound even more evil because, it supposedly targets the transgender young. What about the straight young women or young girls? The young females don't have rights?

It means a man (XY) cannot participate in woman's (XX) sports.

"a male, based on a student's biological sex at birth in accordance with the student's genetics and reproductive biology, may not participate on an athletic team or sport designated under this section as being a female, women's, or girls' athletic team or sport."

So much for the Final Four. Isn’t the Final Four more important than little children getting groomed? It was to Kristy, at least.

Look at that word craft by CNN “consistent with their gender”. No CNN, they are men. They are mutilated men deformed by cosmetic surgery and inappropriate hormones that call themselves women because they have mental trauma and no one loved them enough to refuse to encourage their mental illness.

Long, long ago we were allowed to stone them to death, sigh, for the good old days.

They are not women or girls. They are biological men. No one is stopping biological men/boys from competing in men's/boy's competitions.

No idea. There’s a lot of Democrats here, so I think the Republicans have no spine so as not to offend the leftists. It’s what they do here. Though I don’t see many decent Republican governors in other states. DeSantis is the only one who takes a stand and means it.

I think Holcomb is secretly happy that they overturned his veto. He’ll say, hey, it’s what they people want. Damn straight we want confused boys not to compete on the same teams with unconfused girls.

That would have been wrong too.

What some consider wrong, cannot be undone by other wrongs.

What I disapprove of is the forcing of their ways on others, and doing things that are clearly wrong, like born-males competing against women/girls.
