A top Russian air force commander has reportedly been killed in the Ukraine war, delivering another blow to Vladimir Putin's invasion.
Information about the reported shooting down of retired Russian Air Force Major General Kanamat Botashev was confirmed to BBC Russian by three of his former subordinates.
On Sunday, May 22, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said a Russian Sukhoi (SU-25) attack aircraft was shot down over the Luhansk region and that the pilot did not have time to eject.

Another one bites the dust.
Putin sending retired generals to fly combat missions in Luhansk. What a freaking loser.
Shouldn’t that be “Who WAS Kanamat Botashev?”
The top brass for Russia must be feeling like sitting ducks.
How can it be they continue to be out-maneuvered week after week? Maybe Russia has not made full use of digital tools and other AI elements. Maybe they are still using floppy discs.
Shows they are really having to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get for qualified cannon fodder for this war.
Other articles posted earlier today indicated that General Botashev was retired, and was a member of a Russian private mercenary firm known as the Wagner Group.
The Ukraine war has cleared out a lot of top officer spots for the up and coming Jr’s.
63-year-old retired general
Ukraine trolls are now pushing the alleged death of a RETIRED Russian general?
Are you that desperate?
Putin sent him to his death, not me.
He was almost certainly working as a pilot for the Wagner Group. He was cashiered out after he illegally flew and crashed a SU27. The title general is now an honorific. He was just a working pilot with likely no subordinates. Recruitment age for ground pounders is 45.

Putin has been pulling in all manner of retired troops for this war. The Russians are that short of experienced troops.

Dude, the Russians put the old geezer in the cockpit, not the Ukrainians.
I don't believe anything coming out of this area till I hear it numerous times from diff sources.
Dean # 7 and # 12.
Wagner is hiring 63-year-old retired Russian generals to get shot down by Ukrainians over Luhansk? Putin is pretty desperate, that’s for sure.
It was not clear why Botashev was involved in the war after his retirement, but the BBC quoted his former subordinates saying he probably “just couldn’t stay on the sidelines.” He may also have been sent to Ukraine as part of a recruiting initiative for the Wagner group, a private military contractor linked to Russia’s Defense Ministry and reportedly the Kremlin.
