All of this renaming of military bases is so ridiculous and disgusting. In the whole world scheme of things, it’s a drop in the bucket of importance.
In the fwiw department, I have never served at Ft. Wanaka, or Harvey Milk or a FOB called 0bama.
Not on my DD Form 214.
5.56mm
I used to work in a large bank that would periodically gobble up little banks. One of the biggest pains in the ass during the merger was the “name change.”
Its not just a matter of telling everyone the name has changed...its changing everything. You need to change signage, letter heads, forms, registrations, contracts, etc, etc.
And it costs a fortune.
I will let folks debate the “traditional” aspect of the names of these places. But, I can confirm this will be an expensive cluster-F because I always believe the government will screw it up, spend twice as much, and still do a crap job.
I agree with your comments.
Fort George Floyd, please. /wink
I was born on Ft. Benning. They’re taking away my birthright. As a native American, I find this very insulting.
Agreed! In UCLA (Unknown Corner of Lower Alabama), I attended.
Ft. Surrender
UGH!!
you can thank the republican Nikki Haley for starting this ...
“Braxton Bragg was a very poor general, wasn’t he?”
I’m not too angry about losing his name. I do wish Trump had done some of these on his watch to ensure some good names.
I’m undecided. There is so much history tied to names like Ft Bragg and Ft Benning. OTOH, How frickin’ insane is it to name your military bases after insurrectionists?
Or maybe he IS a national hero:
“Bragg is generally considered among the worst generals of the Civil War. Most of the battles he engaged in ended in defeat. Bragg was extremely unpopular with both the officers and ordinary men under his command, who criticized him for numerous perceived faults, including poor battlefield strategy, a quick temper, and overzealous discipline. Bragg has a generally poor reputation with historians, though some point towards the failures of Bragg’s subordinates, especially Major General and former Bishop Leonidas Polk—a close ally of Davis and known enemy of Bragg—as more significant factors in the many Confederate defeats under Bragg’s command. The losses suffered by Bragg’s forces are cited as highly consequential to the ultimate defeat of the Confederacy.”
Still, a little odd to name a fort after a guy whose greatness consists in sucking so bad while being your enemy that he destroys your enemy from within.
Yeah, now we’re going to get stuck with Fort Toni Braxton.
Fort Fag
Fort Pussycat?
SMH...
Fort Adultery, Fort Plagiarism, Fort Sexual Predator, Fort Misogynist in honor of MLK, Jr.
Fort Harvey Milk, Fort Ceaser Romero, Naval Station Rock Hudson, etc…
Fort Dix is now “Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.” Sounds like a marijuana dispensary.
Ft. Stacey Abrams (Honoring the Abrams Tank)
