Ammo Prices Going Down? Federal .22 at Walmart, 6.5 cents/rd
AmmoLand ^ | May 20, 2022 | Dean Weingarten

In 2020, demand for ammunition grew. Ammunition became difficult to find. Ammunition prices shot up. Record gun sales were recorded in 2020 and 2021. We were in another ammunition supply bubble.

The ammunition bubble may be starting to leak. At the local Walmart, on May 19, 2022, there were about 20 thousand rounds of Federal Automatch in 325 round bulk packs. At $21.16 per 325 rounds, that is 6.51 cents per round, significantly lower than this correspondent has seen for months. The Automatch has generally received good reviews for reliability and accuracy, when used for the ordinary tasks a .22 rimfire is set to perform.

In addition, there were about 7 thousand rounds of CCI standard velocity at $4.83 per 50 rounds, or 9.66 cents per round.  There were about a thousand rounds of Winchester Super X in 222 round packs at $18.83, or 8.48 cents per round. Much of the Federal .22 was stored on the bottom shelf, outside the frame of the picture above.

The clerk at the store was very helpful. He said ammunition had been coming in more regularly than had been the case in the last several months.

These prices may appear high in historical terms.  When we look at them under the lens of inflation, they appear more reasonable.

When inflation is taken into account, ordinary .22 Long Rifle rounds in 1950 would cost 16.8 cents in 2022 dollars.

In 1960, they would cost 15 cents in 2022 dollars. In 1970, they would cost 9.5 cents. Jumping to 1990, they would cost 5.6 cents. In 2005 the cost had dropped to 4.2 cents. Those prices are from price lists, known today as manufacturers suggested retail prices.

I like the old days when a Brick of .22 was $10.29 cents. I still have a few of them.

I have looked in Rural King probably ten times, every time I go there. Tons of 12ga and 20. Very rarely 16, never .410.

It's nice to see the shelves filling back up again, except for certain oddball calibers like .32 magnum.

Prices are still inflated though, possibly exceeding the inflated price of gas.

spot on. I’m hoarding my last three boxes of .410 because I can’t find it anywhere. Been looking at buying a .410 shotshell reloader just to be able to get another 2-3 uses out of those shells.

My guess is that they don’t want to shut down the 12 and 20 gauge production lines to retool for .410. I’m ticked I got rid of 500 .410 AA hulls.

I thought Walmart stopped selling Ammo? Last time i checked, my local walmart was just selling shotgun shells and all other calibers were removed from the shelves. Did they change policy again?

They do not sell "pistol ammo".

Corporate Walmart is idiotic.

I bought .22 shorts for a less than a penny a round back in 1961. 45 cents for fifty.

Opened an old ammo can not long back and was surprised to find I had two large boxes (500 rd each) of .22 LR. Paid less than $3.00 for them back in the 1980s!

“I told them to take a flying leap when Wal Mart asked me for my driver’s license”
Consequently, you didn’t buy the ammo there. Works for them.

45 cents in 1961 dollars is about $4.50 today.

In the 1980's, $3 would be about $8 in 2022, still a fantastic bargain!

It must have been an incredible sale. Going out of business??

“Unless you’re looking for .410 shotgun shells. WTH? Did everyone buy a Taurus Judge during the blm riots?”

I’ve yet to understand why .410 is in many/most cases higher the 12 ga.

Thank you. I learned my lesson when buying auction online and not reading the fine print.

Old world deer hunter:

No .30-30 170 grain anywhere cheap. Good thing I stocked up many, many years ago.

I used to buy 550-round bricks of .22LR at our local Walmart for $18 (about 3 cents a round) back when O’butthead entered the scene. The same Walmart quit selling guns and ammo a couple of years ago. I don’t shop there anymore.

The term is "Economy of scale". When the manufacturers make bazillions and bazillions of any given widget, and only say, a million or so of a smaller widget, the widget that they make more of is going to benefit from reduced cost in development, tooling costs, distribution, etc and can SOMETIMES be the one that is going to cost them the least to manufacture, actually less than the smaller one.

Stuff like ammunition in .410 gauge, or .32 magnum are good examples. I recall overhearing a conversation in my LGS between the manager and a guy who needed some .30-30 to go deer hunting. $100 a box, while .30-'06 was $40 a box. Same deal.

Inflation is draining everybody’s discretionary income. When you are spending all your money on soaring gas, utilities, food, rent... When you are paying $100k over list for a new home and $10k over MSRP for a new car...

Who has money for ammo? Of course demand has been crushed, so inventories are up and prices are coming down.

They broke the world. If you still have money in the bank beyond what you will NEED going forward, next year will be a great time to stock up hard on stuff that you want but don’t need while the getting is good and prices haven’t yet popped.
