TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (AP) — A sprawling U.S. Marine Corps training center in the Southern California desert was put on lockdown Monday due to a report of shots fired, a spokesperson said. The report was anonymous and there was no immediate confirmation of whether shots actually were fired, said Gunnery Sgt. Santiago Colon, a spokesperson for the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms. All personnel were required to shelter in place while the base police force investigated. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department units were at the scene and coordinating with military law enforcement at the base, said sheriff's Lt. Jess Allison. “We don’t have any reports of any victims at this time,” he said. “However, obviously, it’s a large location.” Twentynine Palms is about 125 miles (201 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

It's a USMC base for training, for crying out loud. I'd be shocked if shots WEREN'T fired regularly!

That’s what I’m saying. Why are shots NOT being fired on a Marine base. What the bleep else do we do there? And why was someone running around un-armed? As we used to say anyway “ a well armed Marine base is a peaceful Marine base.” semper fi

Shoot, I saw the headline and figured a couple of Covid sniffles had been reported. Biden better get his war with China started fast before the military and country gets shut down for the Covid midterm variant.

Pathetic. Base commander is a girly-boy. If it were up to me, Marines would be carrying their 1911s or Sigs 24/7.

Didn't we have a shooting out there a year or so ago?

Anyway, I was stationed on that base in the early 1980s and after transferring to Camp Pendleton, went back out there numerous times for exercises such as Gallant Eagle.

I have very fond memories of that place. It got crazy hot out there in the summertime and we would have desert hours such as from 5-10am and then 4-7 pm. In between it was "siesta" time. The heat never much bothered me though and it did get quite chilly at night during winter. I have a ton of stories from those years.

I was stationed out there a number of year. I worked as a civilian on the base last year. This lockdown thing happens every si often. Last time it was a marine who shot himself behind the gym. Sad. There are a lot of crazy things that happen out there.

Here’s an update from the same source:

” .... An accidental discharge of a weapon put a U.S. Marine Corps training center in the Southern California desert on lockdown for several hours Monday, a base statement said.

No injuries were reported in the incident at the vast Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center located at Twentynine Palms, 125 miles (201 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

The statement said the incident remained under investigation. It gave no details of who was involved in the inadvertent discharge, where it occurred and the type of weapon.

A shelter-in-place order was lifted at 12:20 p.m.
....”

Inadvertent weapon discharge, per NBC Channel 4 website.
"At this time, we can confirm that a weapon was inadvertently discharged," the base tweeted. "No injuries have been reported. this incident is under investigation."

In “my” Marine Corps “sheltering in place” would get you your ass kicked.
