I know a couple of ex-military fellows from Taiwan. They seemed more than willing to fight to the death for their country.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, and I watched The Sound of Music so I know all about what happened in Austria in 1938.

Obviously, there are SOME people living on Taiwan who would object to, or even resist, reunification. That's not the point.

The point is, what evidence of willingness and ability of the whole people of Taiwan to fight a bloody, ultimately failing, war with China would justify mussing one hair on the head of a single American sailor or marine?

1. It’s irrelevant whether the people of Taiwan are willing to fight to the death to resist a Chinese occupation. The US has vital interests on and around Taiwan and those should be defended.
2. “Ultimately failing” would be any Chinese attempt to occupy. They do not have the force projection capability to cross 100 miles of open sea and fight even a marginal military. Even only Japanese involvement would ensure the Taiwan strait would be a graveyard for 10s of thousands of PLAN/PLA military. A shooting gallery for the ages.

The US, using air power alone, could ensure not a single ship crosses that strait.
